They need to figure out a way to get back on the field. To go nearly 18 months without your product on the field will be worse for the game than the 94 strike.

But that doesnt change anything about the fact that an agreement was made to honor them in March and now,
In a way I get this-ie they made a deal and even if it turns out to be a shite deal then they have to live with it (ie a player gets his arb years bought out and then plays like an MVP for 2-3 years can complain about their contract in year 3) I’m just curious do we have any firm details on what the “deal” was? I haven’t followed this as closely as I usually do. It’s just March was a lot different place than May with the virus stuff. I’m sure the owners thought it would be a delay of a couple weeks but likely would be up and running with fans relatively soon. were conditions on the prorated salaries or is all this just word of mouth kinda stuff?

Particularly if the other leagues manage to play.

MLB has conveyed its first proposal to players. MLB has dropped the revenue sharing idea and is offering to pay players a percentage of their prorated pay (not the full 100 percent). It’s a sliding scale with the more expensive players taking bigger hits.

there is a meeting of MLB and the players today, so the sides are working to try to get a deal done

I'm just imagining that kind of proposal happening in the NBA.

Just curious. Are there any owners worried about not being able to make payroll if they’re forced to doing a 100% pro-rated salary? Doesn’t most of their revenue come from TV regardless?

The CBA wasn't drawn up with the possibility of no fans in mind.
Tough shite. Players get fricked by things they didn't think to clarify in the CBA all the time. Too bad so sad it finally bit the owners in the arse for once.

From my understanding it is different for each team with some making 40% of the revenue from tv and others making less. Seems a lot are worried because they are not getting their full revenue from tv as well, plus no fans, and having to pay for all it becomes a sunk cost I guess.

They will tell you they cant and will tell you 40% of revenue comes from game day. But that's probably a lie and due to funky accounting
Posted on 5/26/20 at 4:05 pm to WestCoastAg
Wait what? You mean an owner paying himself to rent his own tax free stadium is done to hide revenue from the players? Nah...
Posted on 5/26/20 at 4:12 pm to Dr RC
The MBLPA asked the owners to show their books so they can prove their claims of where their revenue comes from. They sent an incomplete mess that the union couldn't make heads or tails of. Gee, what good faith

This has nothing to do with virus
Players are unhappy with what has happened in free agency the last few years and they are worried about next offseason
Not to mention you have a bunch of pissed off underpaid minor leaguers

MLB players were never going to go for revenue sharing, especially with limited time to figure it all out. Hearing from some this is a bit better but there’s still a lot of work to do.

Exact percentages in MLB proposal aren’t known, but people involved estimate the best-paid stars — Trout, Cole, Verlander, Scherzer, etc — might make about 20-30 percent of their full salary over 82 games plus postseason. So for Cole, for instance, that’d be not 36M but about 9M
quote:
In MLB’s proposed scale minimum salary players will get >100 percent of prorated pay but close to it. Star players will take big hit. Stars can make up some assuming postseason is played but it’s estimated stars will still take about a 50 pct additional hit, more by 1 accounting.

The MLB Players Association has not commented publicly on MLB’s economic sliding pay scale plan, but privately is extremely disappointed, saying the proposal involves massive additional pay cuts . The union also is far apart on health and safety protocols with MLB.

You about to see next year's players get really screwed.... No season hurts some heading into FA with injury issues like Paxton and players like Betts may not get close to what they deserve because owners lost money from this year

@EvanDrellich
The MLBPA is very disappointed with MLB’s economic proposal today, source tells me and @Ken_Rosenthal, calling additional cuts proposed “massive." League offered to share more playoff revenue, but on balance, those dollars are small compared to what players give up, PA believes.

Comical.
I guess the owners don’t want a season

While union may not love MLB’s first proposal it’s important to note that this is simply that — a first offer. While there isn’t a ton of time — MLB is hoping to begin spring training about June 10 — the sides are determined not to let economics stand in the way of a season.

We are about to see more teams lay off workers, scouts, etc.... I know a lot of teams made promises through June hoping the season would be starting but it is looking less likely

And the owners only have themselves to blame. You agreed to prorated contracts back in March and now they're just throwing proposals out they know the MLBPA won't accept and they can use the "we're not the villains" card.
They made their bed, now it's time to sleep in it before you lose this season, lose a bunch of fans, have a lackluster 2021 season knowing more than likely it's heading into a lockout. That's the direction this is heading
Posted on 5/26/20 at 5:53 pm to GeauxAggie972
Yep. This is heading into a really bad trajectory if they don't stop it. Really really bad and a massive blow.
