If those demands are accurate then the issue of playing in 2020 is all on the owners.

I've been inclined in the past to lean with the owners but they made a prorated salary agreement which seems on surface reasonable and fair. The should not be backing out of that just because of potential empty stadiums.

If the government is mandating no fans in attendence they will have some recourse in the future to mitigate those losses.

The players appear to be in a good position for fan sympathy as the owners are driving this to restructure future contracts.

But you’re not taking into account the potential of setting dangerous precedents for all future CBA negotiations. Would you rather make $0 dollars this year to insure that you will keep your $20mil next year or make $7mil this year and take the risk of only making 7mil afterwards?

That’s what the players are trying to avoid. They don’t want to concede because they don’t want the league asking for salary forgiveness every time attendance dips. The owners have proven they can’t be trusted to act in good faith so the players have to stand firm.

I completely understand that's what both sides are doing. But both sides are WRONG! This is something different. Both sides should make even more concessions (maybe the owners make some binding promises towards the CBA in return for this?). If they don't both get their act together they will all look like idiots. If the NBA and NHL get their stuff together and start playing, baseball will have missed their biggest opportunity ever to grow their sport. People were not forgiving after the last strike and they will not be forgiving of this either.

I mean the owners are clearly more wrong here

the players should definitely make an agreement with the owners dictating future behavior. The owners have such a good history of following those

Jesus Christ. Stop with all the quarantine nonsense. Just play the full schedule in the originally-scheduled stadiums with no fans.

Honestly wouldn’t mind; no one is forcing anyone to attend and it’s clear now that hospitals have more than adequate capacity.

MLB seems adamant about ending regular season by about Oct 1: 1) the postseason is vital and there’s concern about 2nd wave 2) MLB TV contracts are for October 3) there may be more NFL/NBA competition by Nov. 1. So players’ preference for 100-120 games over proposed 82 won’t fly.

In any case, players should have a strong hand in talks. It’s players who are taking the risk and who’d endure season w/intrusive health protocols. It’s also true the owners, who made big $ in recent years, should understand they took economic risk and aren’t guaranteed profit.
quote:

Assuming there’s a season, the MLB plan calls for 7 playoff teams in each league — the 3 division winners plus 4 wild cards. The team with the best record in each league would get a bye, and remaining 6 playoff teams would play first round. That is all negotiable, too, though.

A big hurdle is players long-held belief March 26 deal assured prorated pay. From my reading it looks less than in stone; tho prorated pay is mentioned, deal suggests fans at games/need for economic feasibility. Shouldn’t be a surprise owners seek good-faith renegotiation (cont.)
quote:

No evidence of progress yet in MLB/ players talk so no realistic hope to meet the “soft” deadline of tomorrow June 1 for deal. That deadline was soft for a reason, and hope remains to start season July 4 weekend — if a deal can be done by range of June 5-June 9.

Let's see how well this statement holds up after all of the protesting and rioting. I believe Minnesota is on the clock for a spike in about 5 days then the rest of the country in about a week.

Not going to happen

There was no Easter spike, there was to Georgia spike, there was no wisconsin voting spike, we are 10 days removed from the start of memorial day weekend and there has been no spike

Not sure if this has been talked about yet, but Nationals have decided to cut an additional $100 a week from their minor league player stipends going from a $400 a week stipend down to $300 a week.

https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1267323796446490626

Meanwhile other low market teams have committed to pay the $400 a week for the remainder of the year.

This just does not look good in anyway for the Nationals. A team ownership worth close to $5 billion and one of the wealthiest ownership in the MLB. Also coming off a World Series championship with an influx of cash. I just don't see how they thought this would be a good move.

At best what does this save them through the rest of the year $500-$750K? MLB teams cut players and eat salaries worth millions to have them not on their team anymore, but the Nationals ownership can't pay the several hundred thousand to take care of their farm system?

I guarantee they will lose more than they are saving on the optics from this alone as many fans will be turned off from wanting to spend money on the team now. At least the Major league players are all taking up for the minor leaguers.
