Heyman
quote:

MLB in recent talks gave the union 2 options: 1) negotiate a new financial arrangement (sonething other than prorated pay for players playing games with no fans in attendance) or 2) wait until the Coronavirus yo clear to the point where fans can attend games.

quote:

MLB hasn’t yet made new offer to players but has painted bleak economic picture for season w/o fans at games. MLB has suggested hypothetically they’d lose $1.5B plus (1.5-2B) even if 82 games were played for free (no player pay). That’s not happening but union is skeptical of #s

quote:

MLB has been espousing a 50-50 revenue split behind the scenes but no formal proposal has been made to players yet. In any case, players do seem very much resolved not to agree to a revenue sharing proposal on principle (they view at as a form of salary cap, and a bad precedent)

Dumb that they can’t figure out a way to get along and have a season.

Yeah, I figured this may happen.

MLB has the strongest players union in any sport, with by far the sweetest deal, and they aren't going to give an inch even if it means not playing a season, because they will fear setting a precedent.

They are stupid if they let that happen. Baseball is one of the most socially distanced sports, and it seems like they just can't agree on money (go figure).

But they will lose fans if they can't get it going simply because they can't agree on money IMO. I get that the player's union has issues with the owner proposals and all that, but the optics sure as hell look bad in this climate when billionaires and millionaires can't put the bullshite aside for one year to make something happen and make it work.

That's why it doesn't make sense to me that they don't go into it with a "for this year only" standpoint instead of worrying that the owners are trying to cram things in there to forever alter their agreement.

the players get by far the fewest percentage of revenue of any major sport and while revenue has exploded in baseball, salary percentages continue to fall

id argue they miss the forest because of the trees and focus on the absolute high end possibilities (see trouts deal) instead of the fact that rookies get screwed and middle of the road veterans continue to lose money year after year

I've said time and time again if baseball could come back it would be a blessing. They would pick up some casual fans, they would pick up the gambling fan, etc.... Would help the sport more in the long run. Allowing the NBA or NFL to come back first would essentially hurt them long term.

The problem is their CBA ends after the 2021 season. The owners are trying to gain an inch with these new revenue-split negotiations so they can aim for a mile in the upcoming CBA arguments

They’re going to alienate a lot of people doing this.

Well Blake Snell’s comments last week and players backing him up on that won’t paint the picture that way.

The perception among the general public will be that 50/50 is fair. The owners know what they are doing.

Average MLB salary 4.4 million
NBA 7.7 million
NFL 2.7 million
NHL 4.0 million

Rookies I agree kinda get screwed in MLB

Yeah, Snell's comments definitely don't look good for the players.

Neither side is going to come out of this looking good if there isn't a season.

Dayn Perry on the 50-50 split

This article outlines why the players were right to say no to the 50-50 split.
