An abundance of OF, who are MLB ready.
A lot of redundancy too. I think Mercado gets moved, although I bet they were hoping for a little better showing in the AFL to make him more attractive. Grichuk is still an attractive trade piece off the MLB team.
Then you have Piscotty, whose value is down but his contract is pretty team friendly. And Bader, Arozarena, Adolis Garcia, Mags Sierra, Tommy Pham, Jose Martinez.
Only 3 of those guys haven't played in the majors yet. Mercado would have to be on the 40 man this year if they intend to keep him.
This will be an interesting offseason for the Cardinals. Specifically, I want to see how the industry values some the Cardinals prospects.

"#STLCards have made Lance Lynn a qualifying offer ($17.4 million). They have also granted Trevor Rosenthal his unconditional release."
"Rosenthal will spend much of 2018 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and #STLCards did not want to pay his salary during that absence."
hate to lose rosey, but understand the move.

I didn’t think Arrieta would cost more than Lynn or Darvish, but I could be wrong.

I hate to lose Rosenthal as well. Any chance he resigns at a lower figure?

Several players that were discussed as QO candidates ended up being bypassed — which, generally, is a good thing for their earning power in free agency. Zack Cozart of the Reds (post), Andrew Cashner of the Rangers (post), and Logan Morrison of the Rays (post) were among the closest calls that went against the offer.

He will be the highest paid free agent this winter

Maybe he can get Cueto money but he is two years older than Cueto was when he became a FA....

no, JD Martinez will get paid the biggest per year contract of these free agents.
6/150 7/175

I know there is a market, but paying Arrieta 20mil per+ is asinine.
You will regret that contract the day it's signed.

Forgot about him, but still think a KC guy makes it close because of age

just to revisit the rumor during the season that stanton would "never go to the midwest" as reported
From @dgoold on @TMASTL: Stanton and/or his agents have never articulated that he/they would not accept a trade to St. Louis. #STLCards

I feel pretty confident that if it came down to that to solidify a deal, he'd accept.

Dombrowski also suggested that the team does not need to prioritize staying under the luxury tax barrier for a second consecutive season, per Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston. Asked if he thought that was a goal for his club, Dombrowski bluntly stated, “No, I do not.”

Young Japanese star Shohei Otani has hired Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to represent him in his planned move to the majors, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times (via Twitter). Nez Balelo will be the lead agent, per the report, who’ll help steward Otani through what promises to be a fascinating process.
quote:
CAA, one of the larger agencies in the sport, evidently beat out several other major competitors to land Otani as a client. Some of the outfit’s notable clients include Japanese players Nori Aoki and Junichi Tazawa. CAA has negotiated quite a few significant extensions, including big contracts for Ryan Braun, Matt Cain, Adam Jones, Buster Posey, and Ryan Zimmerman along with more recent deals for Stephen Piscotty and Jean Segura. The agency also worked on contracts for Robinson Cano, Yoenis Cespedes, and Rusney Castillo in the course of its former partnership with Roc Nation Sports.
