Dale Murphy not being in while Bonds and Clemens are excluded is a travesty.

I never once saw Jeff Kent and thought “that’s a hall of famer right there”

But Mattingly and Murphy, I assumed both were already in

Crazy.

If he were an a-hole and the writers hated him, I could understand it.

But Murphy is the literal polar opposite to "a-hole"

Does his dirt bike get in too? Remember that infamous story?

Doesn't have the numbers. Needed 400 HR's. Couldn't get there.

The average Jeff Kent season over 17 years was .290 BA, .356 OBP, .500 SA, 22 HR, 89 RBI, 78 runs scored. He was not chopped liver. Only about 100 or so people in the 150-year-plus history of MLB have slugged .500 for that length of a career. I can justify putting him in, I just think others should go in ahead of him.

I would vote for Murph or Mattingly but what’s killing them with the committee voters is they had relatively short peaks before injuries … Murph’s knees, Mattingly’s back … ruined them as Hall of Fame level players. But both of them hung around for six more years, Mattingly as an average player and Murph as a below average player.

Agree with this - always had him in the "Hall of Pretty Good"

I never cared for Kent because he was an arse, but did you know he had a higher career slugging average than Reggie Jackson? (And higher than Murph or Mattingly and a boatload of other major names already in the HoF.)

Y’all are acting like they put Biff Pocoroba in. I have no problem with Kent being in, I just think some other guys should be in ahead of him.

I honestly haven't looked at his stats, or the analytics - just never thought he was a HOF when he played, doesn't mean he shouldn't be in though.

As a kid who grew up in their eras this statement is 100% correct. The MLB hall of fame has about 10 players from the juiced era and Pete Rose that deserve to be in WAY WAY before even mentioning the name Jeff Kent.

There was a stretch of nine years in his career where Kent had over 100 RBIs eight times, topping 120 RBIs three times, and the year he missed 100 he was at 93.

Honestly I probably didn’t think he was a Hall of Famer when I was watching him in real time, either, but those are clear Hall of Fame numbers. I just think Lou Whitaker should have gone in before him at 2B.

Jeff Kent is the all-time HR and RBI leader for a primary second baseman. Pretty obvious HOFer, on his own merit.

Which is absolutely stupid to set an arbitrary statistical plateau.

But my main point was that since Bonds and Clemens, who certainly have “the numbers” are excluded because they played the game “dirty”, Murphy’s being “clean” should equally be in his favor.

Guy was a two-time NL MVP and one of the most recognizable players of his era.

Except he’s really a third baseman with a shite arm they threw out there at 2nd to try to hide. He shouldn’t get rewarded for having a weak arm.

And he had the luxury of hitting either right in front of or behind the greatest offensive player in the history of the sport for the best part of his career. You can’t logically have Bonds out and put Kent in who benefited from the same “cheating,” just indirectly,

Well Bonds being out is the real travesty, not Kent being in.

Dale Murphy won back to back NL Mvps. Was elite in the 80s. Was second only to Mike Schmidt for the most homers in the 80s. His knee problems ruined the back end of his career. He deserves to be in the hall of fame. Ended with 398 homers. Can't get much closer to your imaginary 400 homer threshold than that.
