Hopefully this silliness has run its course and we can get back to having real baseball again soon.

All the biomechanics stuff has benefitted the pitching side of development considerably more than the hitting side. Pitching staffs get nastier every year even with all the injuries
that, and bullpen usage. Im trying to find a tweet I saw a few days ago to illustrate

Equally useless. Two perfect Chicago cubs.

You’re doing a great job of not answering. Which one is better?

Exactly. People are smarter with their pitching and defense. Old people don’t want to believe that though. They want to blame it all on “muh stykeoutz”
Posted on 7/6/24 at 9:26 pm to Lester Earl
Nah, it’s just because they “swing for the fences, now!!”

One of the problems with baseball is its aging fan base that wants it to eternally be the days of powder blue uniforms and astroturf fields and pitchers throwing 20 complete games a year.
The average age of baseball viewers on TV is 57. That’s not sustainable for the sport to have a future, which is why regardless of what old farts think … and I am one, in my mid-60s … they’re stirring things up, as sucky as it is to a lot of people (including me), to attract younger fans. Honestly, college or pro, if you’re not 18 to 49 the sports leagues don’t care if you are alive.
And the analytics thing isn’t ever going away. Basically, all analytics is, is prioritizing the things that give you a higher mathematical probability of a successful outcome.
The catch is that often the things that give you the highest mathematical probability of a successful outcome are not entertaining to fans, especially old school fans.

Yup. That’s crazy. I’m sure the third time through stats are a stark difference as well

Old school starting pitchers unless you were a freak of nature like Ryan didn’t throw every pitch of a game like it was the deciding pitch of the World Series even if they threw complete games.
Banks is right, everyone is swinging for the fences now, but just as much of the reason we’re where we are now is that teams have decided … and they don’t care what fans think about it … that they want every pitch of the game thrown like it was the deciding pitch of the World Series, and not only that, they want every pitch thrown at 900 mph with ungodly rotation.
And they are going to throw as many pitchers out there as it will take to achieve that and to ensure that batters never, ever face a tiring arm.

Or, because pitching and defense are better.
No.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Then there's stats like this
quote:
Aaron Judge has seen a pitcher the fourth time through 18 times in his career.
Willie Mays in 1961, to pick a random classic star and year, did so 66 times. He had a 1.200 OPS with 8 homers.
quote:
why stop there?
In 1941, Ted Williams, one of the most classic year/player combos ..
Ted got to face a SP 4th time through 85 times. He hit .446/.577/.877, which, even by Ted standards, is hilarious.
quote:It's a different sport. Starters go about 5 innings and then teams bring in a revolving door of guys throwing 100 with 15 inches of movement.
one more? Let's check in on Babe Ruth's 1927, when he faced SP 4th time through .. *119 times,* and slugged .894 with a 1.385 OPS.
game's the same though

quote:or maybe this is the best era of pitching depth wise the league has ever seen.
There’s a lot of offensive suckery right now.

You still didn’t say which player was better in the hypothetical. 100 singles and 100 walks or 120 singles and 35 walks?

Same with Mantle. People bitched about his strikeouts
At worst the guy struck out 125/654 ABs. Thats not bad at all lol
I don't think I've ever heard someone criticize Mantle's SO %. Might be high for his era but that's commonplace now.
