The reality is similar to the NBA, people are caring less about both sports.

the NBA's TV ratings are declining.
so much so that the commissioner is forced to talk about it to the media.

MLB just set a 7 year record for attendance last year, the highest ever online streaming ratings, highest TV ratings in half a decade, and the World Series has beaten the Finals in TV ratings in 3 of the last 5 seasons.

i appreciate that people can make any stat fit any argument that they want

example, baseball is literally one year removed from having its least watched world series of all time

and we can frame "highest tv ratings" as a win, even though those highest tv ratings are still less than NBAs crisis ratings

baseball is obviously healthy and the NBA isnt going to go bankrupt in a decade

The biggest issue baseball is facing is a potential labor stoppage here soon. Owners have already been sounding the salary cap alarm this offseason

I may be naive but I really like to think (hope) they won't do that cause that will undo all the terrific gains baseball has made this decade

Agree. It would be hard to believe that 30 ownership groups that had the acumen to become billionaires would do something that unbelievably stupid.

Characteristic Minutes viewed in billions
NFL 974.7
MLB 329.7
NBA 285.2

One of these doesn't add up considering they play twice as many games. Baseball is arse and more boring than NBA to watch even with the NBA drama/ product.

Baseball fans are worse than WNBA fans with their pride and lack of awareness. They love it because it reminds them of when they peaked in highschool and can watch a sport slow enough for their brain to actually process.

You really can't argue how shite their ratings/ viewings are when they play twice as long as any other sport.

The viewing #s for World Series in the current 2 year span is the 3rd worst behind the 2 years before that and the 2 years before that since 1972....

Baseball is the only sport that NEEDS swimming pools, gourmet food, amusement parks, and $5 tickets in their stadium just so more people show up. Most people on vacation will buy tickets for their group costing $20 total and then leave after an hour because its arse. "But we sell tickets" yeah not for people coming to watch baseball for 3 hours.

a one year blip is different than a trend.
MLB is trending upward (back to back year over year increase in attendance and ratings)
NBA is trending downward .

comparing the World Series TV Ratings vs NBA Finals TV ratings - 8 total events (4 Wolrd Series - 4 Finals)

MLB has 3 of the top 4 highest ratings of those events.

MLB's All-Star game last year drew 7.6 million viewers.
the NBA All-Star game the other day drew a 4.7 million audience.

again, MLB is touting it as a "win" because the numbers have been trending upward (minus a 1 year blip for World Series) for attendance, TV ratings, and online streaming ratings.
They are showing increase in popularity and growth over the last few seasons.

the NBA is "panicking" because the numbers are trending downward after 3 years of stagnation.
They are showing a decline over the last few years.

baseball is obviously healthy and the NBA isnt going to go bankrupt in a decade

neither league will ever die, or at least not anytime soon.
neither.

neither league will ever catch football either.

I don't think either league is "dying" at all.
I just find it comical that for some reason people (and it's mostly NBA fans) keep spouting the mantra the "MLB is dying" when it clearly is trending in the right direction recently.

My favorite part of the whole post is the "less awareness than WNBA" part.

And all of that is fair and true. It's just the same amount if mouth breathers who claim baseball is a dying sport also exist to act like the NBA won't survive the decade

Baseball has obviously seen a bump and is probably on equal footing with the NBA for the first time since the late 2000s/early 2010s and that's good. Nationally compelling baseball is great

Anyone who thinks the NBA will fold is a moron. It is fair to be concerned that the style of gameplay everyone has moved to is generally not watchable. I think I’ve watched less than 6 Pels games in the last two years.

The fact that they have also devalued the regular season to the degree they have is bad for a sport that relies on star power

Will be interesting to see how they adjust because they can be staring down another lost decade like they had in the 2000s

Load management ten years ago was acceptable. Resting an aging Tim Duncan on a back to back in January, etc. What it has become is an insult to the fans.

We all knew this was coming since they significantly cut back their coverage. Hopefully, TBS or some other prominent channel picks up the slack.

I think an MLB work stoppage is pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point. Just hope it isn’t lengthy.
