Anyone remember that Nightline Special in the late 80's about black athlete dominance in sports...and we were finally going to get to the bottom of this scientifically...and they talked about "Fast twitch muscles" and I think Peter Jennings came on and interviewed some experts about biology...
and we were making progress half way through the show...a real frank discussion...
And then the last half just turned into interviewing Harry Edwards and Jesse Jackson and the whole thing turned into..."it's racist to say blacks are more gifted naturally in athletics...because then you're also saying they aren't as gifted naturally intellectually" - faulty logic but whatever.
And then Stanford's black track coach came on and said he was going to find the "white Carl Lewis" - and you'll see, everyone will see...it has nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with hard work. Blacks are great at basketball because they "work harder than white people."
Well, we're still waiting...unless you count that 400M runner Jeremy Wariner as the white Carl Lewis or Michael Johnson.
I guess not much has changed politically.

Ok then we can go to soccer. Soccer is the most popular sport for blacks in Jamaica, and African Countries. When they play in the Olympics or World Cup they seem to do bad. You see quite a bit playing in Europe but they're not the BEST players on their team.

Nope, most on this board weren't alive yet in the 80's. And for the old farts who were (ie:Peej), that was a blacked-out phase of pissy drunkenness in which there would be no recollection of said program.

Have you seen where these kids play soccer, I don't think most of that can be called a legitimate soccer field.

Maybe not the best, but possibly the most physically gifted and athletic.

There may be some slight advantages, but overall I think it has alot to do with what sports they focus on when young.
China is in love with basketball, eventually you will see more Chinese born NBA players because thats where the athletic talent will focuses it's attention.

there was that one 100m sprinter from cali who was faster than reggie bush as a senior. drugs got him, though
perspective/scope is a big thing in this discussion, and we need to be reminded of this
super athletes are rare...very, very rare. even within advanced populations like we have in the southern US, super athletes are not common. it's almost assured that those of west african decent in america produce more super athletes per capita than any other race, but that doesn't eliminate the ability of another ethnic group from producing similar athletes

certain african countries are doing a lot better, like ghana and ivory coast
african teams lack discipline, training, and coaching historically
it's much worse in the carribean

You always assumed during the Olympics that the white sprinters (male and female) that the Eastern Bloc would enter in the races were juiced...and still they'd lose badly in the finals.

The countries are poor, typically, but when it comes to their golden boys and girls, they pull out all the stops. Jamaica isn't exactly an economic power either.
Frankie Fredricks of Namibia is the only one that comes to mind, and that's SW Africa. I can't think of another. With the notable exception of Linford Christie, the 100 has been dominated almost exclusively by North Americans.
