Sources told Yahoo Sports Tuesday night that Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons is expected to opt out of the 2020 college football season and declare for the 2021 NFL draft.

Parsons is expected to make the decision official Wednesday morning. Penn State had a team meeting Tuesday night, and multiple people close to the program are expecting him to leave barring a last-minute change of heart.

Although off-the-ball linebackers don’t often crack the top 10 picks, Parsons could be an exception. He‘s widely viewed as the best linebacker potentially available next year and a sure first-round pick as things stand now.

At 6-3 and 245 pounds, running an estimated 4.4-second 40-yard dash, Parsons possesses elite athleticism.

Parsons, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., was a five-star prospect who elected to stay in-state for college, choosing to play for James Franklin and Penn State. He played defensive end in high school but moved to middle linebacker upon his arrival at PSU.

Parsons made an immediate impact for the Nittany Lions and ended up leading the team with 82 tackles as a true freshman. He followed that up with 109 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and five sacks in 2019 as a sophomore, earning All-American honors and the Big Ten Linebacker of the Year Award in the process.

God imagine being a PSU fan and saying "Smart"... I get you don't think they will play out the full year.. or you wouldn't have said this... But some players like to leave a legacy in college. And win Championships. But I guess we are talking about PSU and that is out of the question anyways. Luckily Ja'Marr Chase loves his college team and loves winning. So he would never do that. And he's projected to go before Parsons.

I would imagine that makes some PSU fans a little melty losing first round talent.

I'm sure he'll come out tomorrow and say it's a family health concern, much like the VT CB.

Hard to blame either player, but it would be more genuine if they had the balls to come out and say they're using COVID-19 to bail without criticism.

Let me know when a borderline 6th round pick opts out.

I hope Parsons is as hurt by your chastisement as I am. Everyone should feel this pain, at least once, to remind them they are alive.

Not saying your wrong...but let’s not count our chickens before they hatch here. Things change on a dime nowadays.

Does this mean he opts out of his scholarship offer? Can the university take away the scholarship if they are getting no benefit from the student receiving it?

Scholarships are year to year so yes they could technically pull it, but they won’t.

Top round talent opting out was already the future of CFB, covid just accelerated it.

That's huge
One of best players in the country
I would not hold it against Chase if he did the same
Outside of Chase I don't think LSU has anyone that would benefit from sitting out - too much to gain draft wise.
Guys like Cox at this level would help his stock, Shelvin with another monster season, Rosenthal can prove he's a top left tackle.
Maybe Terrance Marshall could sit out but he's not a lock for first round.

That's 3 first rounders gone and it is August 5. No doubt there will be more.
