UMC would be a great addition. Elite basketball program. Football program has a lot of potential.

Using this logic might as well bring in Kansas as well.

Would be nice to have a few easier football and baseball games. Many fantastic teams will have bad records as we beat each other.

The issue is that UNC is like Kentucky and Kansas. Basketball is more important culturally to them. Do we want to add another Kentucky to the SEC in terms of sports?

But, UNC is a top brand overall nationally given its basketball. I think the SEC should double-down on a Southern Strategy and expand in the South and move into North Carolina and Virginia. Those are the two big Southern States the SEC has no presence in. Time to add schools from those States. To me the two can be UNC or UVA or VaTech or NC State or some combination.

But its not a fit for SEC from sports perspective

Yeah I really question if anyone here actually knows anything about UNC. All these comments about them being some huge national brand gtfoh. They are not a good football program and jumping in the sec isn't going to change that

Charlotte and Raleigh dwarf SC market. That's what UNC brings you. Charlotte is also one of the fastest growing cities in the south.

UNC have a great alumni base and are passionate with their sports.

Do you people even realize that clemson and UNC are equidistant to charlotte??? Have y'all ever been to charlotte? It is a huge Clemson town

I think huge may be a bit of an overstatement. Definitely way behind UNC, but it does certainly seem to at least on par with NC State.

Besides basketball, which is FAR secondary to football, UNC doesn't bring much to the table in the SEC. Clearly geography is immaterial now with two LA schools joining a majority midwestern conference. If the SEC is going to poach more teams they don't need to be concerned if they are in the "SEC footprint".

I disagree, think UNC would be a great pick up. SEC already dominates in football. Adding UNC to join Kentucky as two blue bloods helps the SEC out. Baseball the SEC dominates, if you think about the addition of Texas and Oklahoma already that was 75% of the college World Series being SEC. Dominate the three big sports. Doesn't always have to be a football addition. Then stretch to up to Virginia and get Virginia or Virginia Tech.

Charlotte is really a melting pot. There’s several schools with big alumni bases in Charlotte. Of course the NC schools, Clemson, South Carolina, WVU. Probably others I’m missing as well.

Personally, I’d love to see WVU and VT join the SEC. Adds another fierce rivalry to the conference and I’d love to see WVU/Tenn/UK/VT play regularly. But it will probably never happen lol.

It seems like a good idea for WVU, Pitt, VA Tech to be in the same conference and play every year. I just don't see how that would fit into the SEC.

The SEC should be very careful about expansion. Sixteen teams is a lot of teams to manage and still have a conference.

There's a big cautionary tale RE: basketball as well. If you have a big playoff pretty soon winning the conference is obviated as a focus of attention. The regular season becomes a steadily less important thing.

They may have the 4th most passionate fan base in the state when it comes to football and football gamedays would immediately drop to worst in SEC (other than Vandy). Baseball too

NC State would probably be the best addition for the typical SEC fan (strong baseball with passionate fan base and above average football that could be preseason top 10 this season)

However, UNC is undoubtedly a national brand and that makes a huge difference…I believe if SEC did choose to tap into the Carolinas, UNC will be the choice, but most would be surprised at how underwhelming their fan base is right here in NC. SEC fans will HATE their tailgate set-up (or lack thereof)

Much like Duke, overrated academically.

A huge pain in the arse to tailgate at UNC. Much easier to tailgate at Duke and NC State. Or Wake for that matter.

NC State is the correct move for the SEC. They're a better fit culturally, and just by being associated with the SEC it will push NSCU ahead of the other schools in NC. It might take some time, but eventually (especially football) NC state would be hands down THE football school in the state. Hell, even if a school like ECU or App state joined the SEC tomorrow, and yes I know that's not realistic...but if they did they'd be the best football school in the state in 5 years. I think people underestimate the transformative power of association with the SEC. The TV money, the schedule, everything is raised. You could take almost any school in the country and put them in the SEC, and they'd be way better off than they are now. They'd get their arse kicked on a weekly basis in football, but Vandy doesn't seem to mind.

This guy knows. In general, no one in this state gives a damn about UNC football

If being in the SEC is that transformative for football, then why not take universities like UNC or UVA? They have great programs overall, they’re just middling at football. If being in the SEC matters that much for football then UNC and UVA are potentially sleeping giants.

I don’t know if it truly matters that much—look at Missouri—but if it does then targeting universities with really strong programs overall but middling football would be a smart move.

NC State could also work of course. They don’t have UNC’s overall pedigree, but they don’t need to have it.
