You youngsters may recall a LB for the Saints named Pat Swilling. He signed after a trade to Detroit under the condition that the Lions un retire a number. He wanted number 56, but the Lions retired it since it belonged to Hall of Famer Joe Schmidt who was on the last Lions team to win a NFL championship and had a winning record as a coach for them. He's considered either the greatest or second or third greatest Lion after Bobby Layne or Barry Sanders. He is regarded as one of the best linebackers who ever played.

Swilling wanted 56. Joe Schmidt was okay with him having the number. Joe was the ultimate Lion. Many Lions fans were outraged, but Joe Schmidt was okay with it. No one has ever worn 56 for the Lions since and his jersey still hangs in Ford Field. Swilling never won a playoff game and is forgotten in the annals of NFL history. Joe Schmidt who died not too long ago is still remembered as one of the greatest. Joe was a classy and humble guy who will always be 56 for the Lions.

I think he’s more remembered than whoever Joe Schmidt was

If you’re asking for a legendary number you definitely can’t be a scrub…

Leinart is spot on. Anyone with the gall to make such a request is totally the type of guy who will immediately peace out at the drop of a hat.

Swilling was already an all-pro LB at that time. Most NFL players will allow it for another established player or even a top draft pick. Nabers had to get permission from Ray Flaherty’s family to wear #1.
That’s different than a high schooler expecting to wear the retired # of a Heisman winner. Fans already recognized Swilling as #56. The Nabers thing was a little odd since Nabers was not known as #1, but his #8 was being used by Danny Dimes.

Retiring numbers is a stupid tradition.

Flaherty has been dead since 1994 and hadn’t played since 1935… at some point some of these numbers have to be recirculated once everyone who saw the guy they retired it for is dead

Good for him, it's insane to me that UF still has guys wearing #15 every year

Spurrier wanted him number unretired, and so all were and that has been the standard ever since he was coach.

The fact that USC even asked is crazy.

The fact that they thought they needed to ask is crazy. You can retire a jersey and not a number. If USC wants to issue 11 again he has not freaking say in it.

Well then USC should not be retiring numbers, because that's what they tell their Heisman winners they're doing.

quote:

The USC Trojans have officially retired Caleb Williams' No. 13 — and formally re-retired Reggie Bush's No. 5, meaning that all eight of their Heisman Trophy winners now have their numbers retired.

Leinart clarified his comments amid speculation stating Riley has not asked:

quote:

Coach Riley hasn’t asked me if a recruit can wear my number so we can settle that right now. I’ve been asked in the past before and have said the same thing every time.

Carson Palmer allowed it for Jordan Addison to wear #3…. for one year.

I think Leinart paid attention to that and said, ”Nope, not happening to me.”

Palmer is also a very chill guy who doesn't seem to care about stuff like that at all.

He basically just likes to hunt, fish, and coach high school football.

The fact they have to ask is crazy.

Why can’t they just do it?

I mean what could he do if USC just said "frick it, we giving this due number 11" other than public backlash
He could permanently and publicly sever his relationship with the university and with just cause. USC football would never recover.
