My gut says this sounds like something Riley and Caleb Williams would request. I know he wore 13 at Oklahoma, but the entitlement definitely fits the bill.

What the hell? No it doesn't.

I'm guessing this was a current recruit who might not even know who Leinart is. I'm glad Leinart told USC to piss off.

glad he told them to pound sand. but does he actually have any say so in the matter? I mean what could he do if USC just said "frick it, we giving this due number 11" other than public backlash?
Telling one of the best and most influential players in your school’s history that he has no say in what they do with his jersey number that was retired is a quick way to get boosters and alum to turn on you.

If they did that then I guarantee they would have boosters stop donating until the coach or AD that pushed the decision were fired

High school kids are so entitled.

I don't even get why a particular jersey number is such a big deal for a high school recruit, that it becomes an issue in their recruitment.

Its not like an incoming freshman has established recognition among fans for wearing a specific jersey number. Almost no one can tell you with confidence what numbers their favorite college team's players wore in high school.

this is why you retire jerseys and not numbers.

I bet Bryce Underwood could have gotten a certain number if he asked for it…

God that Southern Cal vs. Texas Rose Bowl seems like a lifetime ago. Peak college football.

If I'm the head coach and I have some recruit putting on the pressure and making a retired jersey number N issue, red flag. Recruitment if that player stops immediately. Not a good fit for the program. Go be somebody else's headache.

If they want to do this then they need to un-retire all the retired numbers and just say that they aren't doing that anymore. Asking one guy is a slap in the face.

Boosters care about tradition, and if the program stops honoring their traditions, their money will stop flowing. We like the think west coast schools don't care like the SEC does, but USC may the one example out west that treats things like we do in the south regarding football. They care a lot.

End of the day, they could just say F-it, we care more about this recruit that we'll have for 18 months more than our Heisman Trophy winners, but I think they are smarter than that.

That recruit can make them future money… Leinart can’t

why do you think recruits consider schools like USC? It maybe has something to do with the prestige guys like Leinart established and/or carried on. Without guys like him winning Heisman trophies and national titles, USC is just a private school in California

You are part of the demise of college athletics.

Just like there were guys who loved the super team era in the NBA. Now the league is dying a slow death with declining interest from the youth, since their dads don't have teams to pass on to them.

They often ask for a lot more than this

Entitled attitudes of top recruits has gone into hyper drive. If you want the best players, you'll have to accept a shite load of "red flags".

Underwood wore 19 in high school and at Michigan.

19 is not a retired number at LSU

19 on offense for LSU last year was a true freshman, walk-on QB.

So yes, I bet that if Underwood had signed with LSU, he would have gotten 19 if he asked for it.

Not a fan of retiring numbers either, but most around here seem to love it.

Dying such a slow death they’re gaining teams and not losing them
