Good job, you do know some of the wizards in this, but what you fail to address is the resolution to this exact problem. As a matter of fact, A&M got their ducks lined up in this regards as recently as the end of the regular CFB season. A&M moved very fast on this during the summer months.
You're right, A&M wasn't going to the SEC without an academic curriculum that was "athlete friendly" and not called AgDev or AgEco... They have that completed, and without the lowering of academic admissions for JUCO or High School players.
By the way, every other point you hit on is correct. It has nothing to do with Tech or Baylor NOW.... In 1996 it had everything to do with Tech or Baylor.
and the UT backers wont allow A&M to change its standards thus losing the competitive advantage in recruiting in the state,, and Texas has NO REASON to lowers its standards, since they have been very successful under the current rules.
see the 300 million dollar contract they just signed

Yep, and A&M was able to creatively combat this issue without having to lower its standards. It was a matter of finding the crop of academic faculty to say "yes" to the proposal.
The Horns on this thread saying its about anything other than $$ and academic standards have no idea what they are talking about, or they listen way too much to Chip Brown, Ketch and Dodds. Texas has no say in what A&M does going forward, especially when the Legislature session is completed May 30th.
The A&M regents and rank and file actually impressed me for once this past fall. It's about damn time.

lets get that out of the way.
and yes, A&M has some control to what they do inner institutionally
but if the UT powers that be, want to keep A&M from bolting, and lowering its standards and letting the SEC into UTs backyard, they can stop a&m from going off on its on,, NOT by forcing them to change internal rules or not allowing, but by withholding funding.
ITS ABOUT MONEY,, not all MONEY comes from TV contracts related to sports,,in fact that is a pittance compared to what the state puts into it.
if the legislature sticks its nose into what A&M had done,, OR they simply say,,
we dont like this little lowering of standards for athletes so we're going to make you come to austin and explain yourself, and we might withhold some funding.
and it wouldn't just be the UT supporters,, EVERYONE other than aggies would object, Tech,UH,Baylor SMU,, TCU and yes RICE
then a&M will back down,,
Perry has no real legislative power and he is the aggies best ally in Austin
NOW,,
the one aspect that might support your argument it the very reason the thread was started,, this ESPN contract.UT may decide to let a&m do its thing, since they have their bread buttered for the next 15 years
but 15 years will pass quickly,,and why buy the cow when you get the milk for free
I don't see UT just letting A&M have a competitive advantage in recruiting without putting up a fight,, and UT doesn't need the SEC

The thing is, A&M isn't lowering any standards with the creation of the General Majors Department.
The problem A&M was facing was finding the Academic Faculty that would take on the project.
There is nothing to explain to UT or anyone in Austin other than we created a new department with the same admission and internal standards as UT, and we did it within our budgeted means.
A&M is not afraid to upset the apple cart in June. Two years is a long time to get over butthurt feelings. A&M's argument will be we are doing what is in our best interest, and at the end of the day, the Legislature is not going to go out of its way to try and harm A&M. If that were to take place, you'd see a civil war in the Legislature like we haven't seen in some time, and it would be nasty.... When all the grunts and groans silence in September, people will go about their ways and this will have been another moment in Texas history.
I wasn't referring to you in my post. It's quite obvious to me where your loyalties are harbored.

I wasn't sure as an Aggie you could even read
just making sure
and it doesn't matter when A&M makes a move it still needs legislative approval,, sine die has nothing to do with it. so may june sept,, doesn't matter,,
why would UT and their supporters just GIVE a competitive advantage to a&m and allow the SEC a foothold?

Since Texas is locked for 20 years, could the SEC still accept the Horns into their fold? Or are the Horns out for 20 years?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Horns are locked out. Texas has been setting up their independence since 1998. This is from talking to some Texas and A&M brass that are in the know. They just couldn't do it right away in 1996..
SEC would have to essentially buy-out this 20 yr. (or whatever remains on it @ the time) deal and renegotiate the current contract ESPN has with the SEC Network. Could happen, and if it does, it would be MASSIVE.

Slive and the SEC really want the Dallas and Houston TV markets, BAD!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the question is how badly ESPN/CBS want these markets
to make financial sense, ESPN/CBS would have to re-write our contracts to increase payout about 17% just for each SEC team to break even
Essentially, this would lead to 3 super-conferences:
ESPN ,CBS, and Fox perhaps..

4 and 6 last time I looked. Dallas/Metroplex actually ranks ahead of Houston in some media categories because they have more people who sit around watching TV and listening to the radio instead of working for a living.

Ball Gravy is a proven liar. It is easier for him to live in his fantasy land than it is the tragic reality of A&M football.
