re: Let's talk about Will Clark. Where does he rank in your mind?

Will Clark is one of the nicest guys I've met. He never talks about himself, gives of his time to kids at baseball instructional clinics, and has nice things to say to everyone.

My uncle got to know him a little in recent years and also had really good things to say about him. He was my favorite player as a kid.
I watched the Thunder and Lightning documentary also and thought he seemed like an alright guy. Deciding to retire a couple of years early so that he could spend more time with his disabled son seemed like the right decision, even though he was still playing well.

How old are you, wilford brimley?

a guy who loved the game, and played that way.
he gave u everything he had for 9 innings.
he went out on his terms, he had 2 year deal with cardinals on table, but felt it was time to be with his wife and kids. he was done playing baseball

I knew he retired early but thought it was for elbow/hunting reasons. Never heard this. Where'd you hear/read this info?

I always heard he was less than pleasant to be around
He coached me in high school for 2 years and was nothing but humble and outgoing with his help to younger players. Fortunate to have a friendship with him now. My opinion is biased but he definitely ranks high in my mind both on and off the field.

I want to meet him. He was my hero growing up and I live close by. Let's make this happen.

He was my hero as a kid. Favorite player ever.
I wore 22 and worked to hit from the left side trying to emulate him. My first taste of live baseball was watching those Rangers' teams of the mid 90's. I like Pudge, Juan Gone, Rusty, Mac, Palmer, but Will the Thrill was my favorite player. If not for the injuries I think he is a HoF, but career as it played out he was a great player, but not an all-time great.
That last sentence was actually difficult to type because part of me will always see him through the eyes of a wide eyed child.

Regarding your comment to Celtic Dog, about earlier stars. I know all of the players mentioned, and , in fact played against all of them. Will Clark was as good a hitter as some of those mentioned.

He came over to Cardinals after Roidgwire went down with an injury. He gave the team a lift, and even lit a fire under jd drews arse.
He hit .345 12 homers and 42 rbi's in only 51 games. When he came over, he got re-energized and was killing the ball, and winning games for stl. They offered him a 2 year deal, but he wanted to be with his son and family. He left on his own.

I shook his hand at Rocky and Carlos. He was good, but that veal parm and baked mac are hall of fame worthy.

Loved Will Clark...will always remember his monster game 1 against the Cubs in the 1988 playoffs at Wrigley...4 for 4, two home runs and 6 RBI's...
career .300+ hitter...probably didn't take PED...should have gotten more consideration for the hall of fame...

In his prime, he was a legit Triple Crown threat, and there aren't many of those around.

Go on a Wednesday and try the Brushaloni with Mac & Cheese with extra red gravy. It's incredible. Bring an extra belt in a larger size.
I met him at a wedding. I was drunk as sh!t and he couldn't have been nicer.

If you were a Cub fan in 89 and all you saw of him was that playoff series you might think he was the GOAT. But if you saw everything else, good player but IMHO not elite.
Interesting I think he's the reason all these players put their gloves over their mouths when talking on the mound now cause in that series he got a big hit off Maddux cause he read Maddux's lips saying "fastball in" before serving it up for a key hit to Clark.

McGwire didn't want none of that.
