I've tuned in to several matches through the Fox Sports GO app, but with the start times and no USA being in it, definitely haven't felt the need to watch as much as before.

ETA: I have Iceland/Nigeria going on the ipad currently.

Even excluding Team USA games early in World Cup from 2014 and 2010, Fox Sports (Fox, FS1) is down around 39% and 14%, respectively. Cannot be the numbers that were expected when Fox ponied up big for this event. Just not enough buzz domestically

this is very surprising. would have never seen this coming

Very surprising that you got a bachelors of arts in Bro Jobs from Texas A&M but you don't like soccer.

No shite, Austin Karp. When we lost to T&T, I'm sure Fox execs were more devastated than the most fervent US supporter. The numbers were going to be down even if the US was in it just due to the times of the games. It won't be any better in 2022 when it's in Qatar.

39% is a lot but that has a lot to do with what times the games are on.

14% is pretty much 0 when you consider how much cord cutting has happened since 2010

either way, i dont get any of the ad money so i dont GAF if fox is losing money

i'm pretty sure i will be able to watch the games somewhere even if the ratings go to 0

It's almost like all of the people who work full time can't tune into games that start at 7 am and end at 2 pm

Globally, the World Cup averaged over 3 billion viewers in 2010 and in 2014.

The US ratings may suck, but the World Cup is undeniably the most popular sporting event in the world.

Eh, depends how you measure popularity. The actual 2014 FIFA World Cup Final attracts the same size audience as the 2015 Cricket World Cup Final. The 3 billion figure for the FIFA World Cup is the total viewers throughout the tournament. Obviously many of those are the same people.

The FIFA World Cup is definitely more popular than the Cricket World Cup.

It won't be any better in 2022 when it's in Qatar.

It would be better if they play in the summer, but it could hurt them if they move it to November-December.

But they will be swimming in money in 2026.

In America and Europe, sure. What about in India?

How long did they purchase the rights for?

2026 will be huge.

The finals of the last two tournaments were essentially the same. Some reports suggest the 2015 Cricket World Cup Final was the most watched singular sporting event in the history of the world.

I'm sure more unique individuals tuned in to the FIFA World Cup throughout the entirety of the tournament, and that's a fine way measure it, but a different one too.

LOL

If USA was in it, those ratings are up big time. Some rating geniuses there.

Is redrifle still a fluffer for gay porn? NBA needs him back on his knees for their star players.

Fox reportedly only paid 10% more than in its current $425 million contract. On its face, this was a somewhat crazy move because Fox had not even broadcast its first World Cup game at the time, and no one knew what country would host the 2026 tournament. Diving a little deeper, the answer is somewhat clear. FIFA didn't want any legal trouble from Fox, since, in a shocking move, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be hosted in the fall or winter due to heat concerns, which directly conflicts with the NFL season and other programming.

It will likely be under Disney in the next year anyway.

The timing just kills it

Even sans USMNT I think a lot of people would be enjoying an excuse to drink and watch if the times were better.

In 2014 bars were pretty packed even for non-US games, it was a great time. Hopefully the enthusiasm will pick up. Even if you don't care about the growth of the game, it's a really good time.

I’m a very casual soccer fan.. I enjoy the high energy games but for some reason I haven’t watched a single minute of the World Cup so far.. I’ll probably watch the knockout round but without the US and a lack of buzz around the event, I have little desire to watch.. Part of it I believe is a level of embarrassment that we didn’t qualify

If your team is not included, you won't have much interest in the overall tournament.

It's similar in other sports, too.

For example,in the NCAA basketball tournament, if your favorite team is still in it, you will be more likely to watch the other games
