FOX has put half of the matches on FS1, a channel most people don't have
This is just false. From what I noticed they put the early game on there and the other 2 on fox even during the week. On weekends it’s all fox.

This should be no surprise because of the early games, no US team, and cord cutting. I’ve watched most of the games on my phone at work. You aren’t going to see watch parties anywhere because the “late game” is 1pm central.

Anybody not watching is missing out.
You can be only modestly interested in soccer and have a great time watching the world cup. Fun as hell.

Agreed. Last two games today were great. That Germany goal! The whole Cup has been extremely entertaining.
The time difference does suck though, 5am here for the first games isn't fun.

No doubt, if only the games would stretch into the evening

ESPN has 87 million subscribers while FS1 has 84 million. LINK
That really isn't enough of a difference to explain why they are always rated so much lower than ESPN.
The real issue is people simply don't think about them as much. When a person puts on a sports channel the vast majority of the time they are going to go to ESPN first simply out of habit and then to their regional network b/c odds are the local/regional pro baseball/basketball/hockey teams will have a regular season TV deal with them. Go to any bar w/a sports package and the same thing holds true. More often than not unless FS1 has has a major game on every TV will be on on ESPN or the primary regional provider regardless of what they are airing. FS1 is the channel you have to actively go out of your way to get the bartender or waiter to switch the TV to.

That's why I think the ratings are better than they seem on the surface.

12 of the 22 games that were played prior to June 22 were on FS1.
And even the early game tomorrow is on FS1.

Saturday's Germany-Sweden game drew the largest ever audience for an English-language broadcast of a non-USA World Cup group stage game: 5.636M.
That is also bigger than the audience for the 1994 USA-Colombia game: 4.81M.
The combined audience for Germany-Sweden between Fox and Telemundo was 9.368 viewers.
The combined audience for the 2010 U.S.-Algeria game between ESPN and Univision -- which you might have heard about over the years -- was 8.393 million.
