I think the players union would probably take an issue with that

He isn't going to sign a long term contract. Why would he?

I've been half arse paying attention to the cap. Why the huge jump in back to back years? I understand the TV deal, just not the staggered aspect of it. $70M to $96 to $108 is crazy.

Yeah I agree you pay it but woof, that will be crazy at 36.

MJ won his last finals MVP at 35. Just for perspective

Any GM would sign him to the deal.. He's going to squeeze Gilbert out of every possible cent for that letter.

He has a lifetime contract with Nike, amongst other things.

Money doesn't mean shite to him.

Having the option to leave after any given season if you please is much more preferable when money isn't an issue for you.

Then why get caught up in such a non-issue? LBJ has a realistic shot at winning multiple championships in the next 5 years, with one being on the back end of his career (especially if Kyrie stays), barring a major injury which hasn't happened throughout his career. The cap will eventually go up again, it's obvious you sign him, and based on percentages it isn't shocking at all.

Which accouting for inflation comes out to be $49m in 2016 dollars.
So likely close 55 million in 2021. So based on the salary cap in 1997-1998 and the inflation adjusted salary, Jordan's contract was way crazier than LeBron's would be.

I don't know if LeBron will be worth it, but a lot of that is dependent on his game and changes as he ages.

I'm not worried about it but considering the figures I thought others would balk at it. I'm just playing devil's advocate but there are others who think it wouldn't be worth it. They're crazy though.

If I were a top 5 player, and I already had a max contract under my belt, I would just do like LeBron and sign a series of one or two year deals. Get that max money, with the flexibility to bolt if the team isn't doing things right. And you have the ability to forego a little cash in order to afford a free agent piece or give a younger player his share.
