A white basketball player is giving a diatribe about white privilege, when he works in an industry built around black privilege?

I love these athletes that whine about racism and having equal outcomes based on race in everything they aren't dominating the numbers, but yet want their sports to be left alone.

I am perfectly fine with them getting equal outcome for racial diversity in other things if all sports franchises are required to also represent the population demographics.

White Person: White americans are the devil, hold all the wealth, privilege, etc..

National Media: We applaud you, you are a beacon of hope for equality...

Black Person: Black people need to pull themselves up by the bootstraps, get an education, stop selling drugs, fathers stay at home and raise young men. Teach them right from wrong, so they can be better fathers, and raise black children to be something more than a racial statistic...

Media: You Uncle Tom mother fricker.........racist, white supremacist, house wicker...

It’s the fact that, demographically, if we’re being honest: I have more in common with the fans in the crowd at your average NBA game than I have with the players on the court.

How in the hell did he come to this conclusion? I'd really be curious.

It doesn’t bother me when people are consistent, but most applaud when a celebrity or athlete says something they agree with and just trot out the old “shut up and dribble/act/sing” line when it’s something they don’t agree with. As if somehow being a known person forfeits someone’s moral authority to express whatever opinion they please just like any other American.

Someone said exactly once the line "shut up and dribble".

We've been reading "white man bad white man racist" articles for years now.

Happens every single time one of these threads pops up and goes back to the Dixie Chicks. I’m sure it happened plenty before then as well.

I’m not sure that’s what those articles are actually saying most of the time.

how often does that happen, though? what Korver just spewed is what basically all celebrities and athletes get to say to get "applauded" by their fellow celebrities and news media. it's all done so they get to pat themselves on the back and get the "that's a good boy" tap on the head from their fellow celebrities

it's such a rare occurrence for an athlete or celebrity to express a non media-approved opinion that that's why it stands out.

but i agree with you that it should always be "shut up and dribble" on any opinion because average americans shouldn't GAF what any "famous" person says about any issue because they don't even come close to living the same life as any average american

wtf is he talking about. No player in the nba has been a slave. None of their fathers were slaves, and none of their grandfathers were slaves. The only reason it is even an issue is because some people make it one. LET IT DIE

Because some anonymous comments on a message board has the exact same impact as an article written by the Washington Post, New York Times, or a well known NBA athlete.

Really?! You're obviously being purposely obtuse.

It's pretty straightforward and simple.

Why do you think people want reparations?

This is because the overwhelming majority of instances of politics creeping into sport is either telling white people we suck or some form of, "frick TRUMP."

That shite is just old and played out. That's where I think the "omg just shut up" stuff comes from.

If an athlete came out with a thoughtful comment about the economy(even if most here disagree with it) I doubt they'd be hit with, "SHUT UP AND DRIBBLE."

I think the issue is that self important athletes feel like their opinions on matters other than their expertise (typically the sport they play) should be taken more seriously than a random person on the street. You play a sport, you're famous because you play a sport, why should your opinion on things outside of that sport count for more than any other person on that subject?
