I know a lot of people don’t like Joel Klatt, but he’s been saying the same thing for awhile.

Yeah but extremely slowly. The NCAA and member institutions will fight every step of the way to keep that sweet revenue. It should have been done decades ago

College football is BIG BIG business, nothing more. The last thing on anyone's mind (other than the fans) is the integrity of the sport.

It's been this way for a hundred years. I've seen a couple movies from the early 1930s about football and they were pulling kids that didn't give a shite about college from coal mines and factories and paying them to play for the big State U home crowds.

I’m worried about the focus strictly on the playoff, that if you’re not one of the playoff teams, 'Why does it even matter, who cares? Let’s just opt out, let’s get ready for the NFL.'"
I don’t understand this notion.

We now have MORE teams that can make the NC.

Why do people focus only on the playoff now and why weren’t they focused only on the NC during the BCS 2 team NC?

ESPN is one of the main culprits

ESPN is THE culprit as far as I'm concerned. No other organization has done more for the corporatization of college football than them. ABC and CBS are also big offenders. But ESPN has been the main driving force behind the sport for the last 25 years or so.

Look at Iowa, said Herbstreit. The Hawkeyes started this season 0-2 as questions swirled about a lawsuit levied against the university by a group of former players and about the future of head coach Kirk Ferentz. Would that story matter in the BCS 2 team NC era?

ESPN has like a full 2 hour special just for the Playoff Selection alone. Start blaming your own employer Herbie

Wrong. It’s a facade. Is the playoff better than the BCS, yes and no. Yes, 4 teams get a chance instead of 2. But those teams are still coming in based off of preconceived notions, name brand, bias, etc. No because it’s continued to diminish the excitement for other bowls, gambling aside.

I’m probably in the minority, but I liked it better pre-BCS. It was pre-conference realignment obsession. More rivalries. For many teams, winning 7 games meant the season was a success to some degree. Beating yourself rival made a 5-win season tolerable.

BCS bowls and conference championships were still really big deals and the BCS CG was just the finale, so yes it would probably be a bigger deal back then. Hardly anyone gives 2 fricks about the NY6 since the playoffs started

I feel like you answered the question. People focus on the playoffs more because more teams have a legitimate shot.

When it was fewer teams, you had to focus on other accomplishments. Bowl games themselves we’re a laudable goal. Now, the major ones are woven into the playoffs system...so who cares about the sugar bowl? It’s now a semi-final.

This will only get worse if the playoffs are expanded.

I think the playoff created too much of a feedback loop for the "haves".

It's basically Bama, Clemson, tOSU, and then sprinkle in one of UGA, ND, & OU....and once in a while a UO, UW, or FSU.

If you're a fan the other schools after awhile you will look elsewhere for sports entertainment.

No one is looking out for CFB....only their schools or conferences.

By the time these asshats figure this out CFB will already be NASCAR.

Or you know, they’re 12-0 or 11-1 REALLY good football teams. Does it sometimes get a little messy at the #4 spot? Sure, I guess.

BUT, what is different compared to the BCS 2 team NC? Why is their less excitement?

Nobody’s arguments make any sense to me.

Why has the BCS or playoff changed this? I don’t think it has. The same teams happy with 7 wins and a big rivalry win are still happy with those seasons.

I don’t understand ANY of these “playoffs have ruined things” takes.

What's happening in college football has been happening in all sports really.

The individual athletes are more concerned about themselves than the team. In the old days this sort of attitude was not tolerated, it was viewed as selfish and condemned and discouraged. Nowadays it's excused or downright celebrated.

Team sports and selfish individuals don't go well together. This isn't boxing or golf where you are a lone wolf.

Players sitting out bowl games was simply not a thing 20 years ago, now it's common place. Kids quitting mid season was also not a thing, now it happens all the time.

Human nature hasn't changed. Players are being selfish now because they are allowed to be.

I understand the want for more playoff teams, but if LSU made the playoffs with the following schedule, it would be ridiculus:

Utah St.- WIN
Northwestern State - WIN
Rice - WIN
Louisiana Tech - WIN
Auburn - LOSS
MIssissippi State - WIN
Florida - LOSS
Arkansas - WIN
Vanderbilt - WIN
Alabama - LOSS
Texas A&M - LOSS
Ole Miss - WIN

That’s 8-4 and probably finishes in the Top 25 final rankings, especially if they were preseason ranked. This team does not deserve to be in the playoffs and I LOVE LSU.

Bruh, Kirk, you either are about telling players this is about the team and team goal, or you are about telling players they are the most important things in the world and everyone is using them like a pawn in the rich mans game

The transfer portal was a massive blow to the sport we've known and loved. As soon as you told 18-20 year old kids that if they weren't starting their freshman year they could leave with impunity it opened the floodgates. If we ever start paying players (legally I mean, om top of what's been done for decades) just kiss it goodbye
