Recruiting high schoolers isn’t quite as important now with CFB free agency
HS recruiting is arguably more important now than before. This year, of teams with the better HS recruiting talent, 74% of them won across FBS straight up. That's a record high.
The argument is made that heavy portal recruiting of mercenaries will eventually toxify your culture and ruin your ability to develop players andaimtain a coherent team environment.
There is a lot to that theory, too. In the NFL, the best teams have tye least amount of free agent pickups on their roster. The best teams build through the draft and then only supplement through FA in a couple areas of need. They don't build their entire team that way.
DeBoer is one hell of a football coach. But if Bama sniffs a recruiting class outside the top 5, they will want him fired, just like they did with Mullen at Florida.

the cultural fit/recruiting will be interesting to see
I think this is largely overstated. Winning is all that matters. Saban wasn’t exactly Mr. Southern charmer.
DeBoer I think is a great hire. Now the really interesting period begins to see what happens to the roster, and what coaches DeBoer goes and poaches to help sure up any recruiting weaknesses.
It’s hard not to be impressed with DeBoer’s resume of immediately winning games everywhere he goes.

... if this is true, than the new athletic director, Troy Dannen just brought the jinx with him. The Tulane jinx --- by making University of Washington into the new stepping stone of college coaching.

Bo Nix has been playing FBS college football longer than Kalen DeBoer has been coaching FBS college football

I am surprised he's leaving. He got to the title game this season at Washington. He can recruit talent and he can coach. I think the path in Seattle is easier and there's less pressure. He can go 9-3 and make the playoffs there. If he goes 9-3 at Bama he can make the playoffs but he'll catch heat. You can't please the fans at Bama unless you win multiple national championships.
If you look at past dynasties and retirements there was a lag between greatness at many schools. Switzer, Bryant, Osbourne, the Miami coaches, and at many other places. I think he'll do well, but will that be good enough after three years in Alabama? 9-3, 10-2, and 9-3 without any national championships gets him fired.

I'm sure he's just absolutely shaking thinking about the dregs that make up the lower half of the SEC.
New Mexico State did too a couple months back.

It is a very good hire!
Michigan was looking at him in case Harbaugh leaves.
Looks like Harbaugh wants to stay in Michigan.

Following up Saban with a one year wonder. Guess DeBore just wanted to cash in while he could.
Nah, he’s a good coach and has won everywhere he’s been.
He’ll continue to be a good coach and Bama will have good teams but will “good” be good enough for a fanbase that has been accustomed to expect great?
Tall order for any guy following the run Saban had.

Suck a dick, Troy Dannen. Maybe you can convince Willie Fritz to go to UW

I was really hoping it would be Harbaugh so he could beat UM in the CFP next year and complete the Bum Phillips prophecy.

You have to start somewhere. Where was Urban Meyer before he got to Florida? Bowling Green and Utah.

All I care is that we show up prepared and execute to our potential and don’t beat ourselves. If we do that, wins will take care of themselves. My expectations as a fan have zero to do with Nicholas Lou Saban. Our history predates 2007.

I think when people talk about fit, they mean the SEC-style grind in recruiting and booster circuit. It's largely not the same in other big conferences. Remember all the Big10 unwritten rules of recruiting? Also, the West Coast guys never seemed to get into the grind of recruiting. Those West Coast guys NEVER had to deal with admin/booster/fan pressure like an SEC (or Big10, for that reason) school.
The coaches who prioritize scheming/coaching (which DeBoer fits) seem to have problems getting out and running early on in their SEC tenure. That's why the "culture/fit" stuff comes up. DeBoer is a much better version of a guy like Harsin, but they're similar. Harsin couldn't last a year. DeBoer will likely need a couple years to get a footing in the grind/expectations and to "coach up" Bama for the first new system in 15+ years.

Winning is a product of recruiting
Saban didn’t have to be the southern charmer but his results spoke for itself. He was honest and I think he evolved over the years in recruiting too.
KD will be in a new world at UA, and the pressure will be another level of what he has experienced.
Uphill climb but he has the tools.

great hire imo. Id be ecstatic about the hire if I was a bama fan.

No complaints here. Now priority one is the staff, locker room, and signing day. After that, it starts getting real.
