He carried those 80s teams on his back.

Why do people say this?

In the 80s, the defense averaged 9th in points per game, with a #1 and a #2 finish.

For his career, the D averaged 11th, including being in the top 8 for half his career, 8 out of 16 times. Of those 8, they were #1 twice, #2 once, #3 once.

Denver made the SB 3 times in the 80s, 86/87/89. Denver's defense averaged 7th place in points against, 1st/15th/7th in those 3 runs.

I mean, what are we talking about when we repeat that tired phrase that Elway did it all on his own? Why did that ever become a thing?

Jim Kelly+

Jim Kelly doesn't get the credit he deserves despite being a dominating QB in both the USFL and NFL, his seasons with the Houston Gamblers in that Run and Shoot configuration are arguably 2 of the most dominating seasons a pro quarterback has ever submitted then he goes to Buffalo and leads them to 4 straight SB appearances in the K-Gun just awesomeness

John Elway was a beast. He could do it all. And he played a lot of years in the middle of his career with shite receivers and running backs before he got Rod Smith, McCaffery, Sharpe and Davis. It was a different era of football. Go back and watch those two super bowls. Is he top five ? Nope. But he's somewhere on that list.

Not to mention playing outdoors in Denver. But, I'm guessing lsupride has his dome numbers ready for us.

Jim Kelly played outdoors in Buffalo, the conditions up in western New York are ABYSMAL for throwing the football in the winter yet he generally always did with great proficiency

You do realize how different the game was back then for passers, right?

I am not saying Elway is a GOAT candidate, but he carried his teams to the Super Bowl with limited talent on the offensive side of the ball until later in his career.

That all said, as a passer, he wasn't the most accurate or prolific, but when you basically eliminate bump and run coverage, you can surely expect TD pass #'s to skyrocket, which they did.

This might be the dumbest thread in the history of the MSB.

You do realize he compared Elway to his peers, right?

Yes, and yet he was never the best or even near the best in his era, which is the point.

He had really good defenses as well.

List of QBs who's career intersected with Elway's that have higher QB ratings:

Seems pretty stupid to consider people like Kurt Warner and Peyton Manning his "peers" considering that their careers began as his was ending.

When you have a very long career you're going to have some really young guys play a year or 2 in your final years

Peyton Manning is almost 16 years younger than him

I think you just get a kick out of trolling with your blatant stupidity

He's best "stat" is his comeback drives and those related games.

You know I've always wondered why the 1991 Denver Broncos trailed the Houston Oilers in that playoff game 21-6 initially and then pretty much the entire game until the final minutes despite the home field advantage. Same thing essentially the next season against the Chiefs: trail 19-6 at home with I believe 5 min remaining. I mean yeah give him just credit for those Ws but how the hell do you reach those depth points as a team where these comebacks are required, just really weird. That Denver Broncos team almost blew a 21-3 halftime lead in the 1987 AFC Title Game at home and were a Jeremiah Castille forced fumble away from overtime. The next season they literally blew a 24-0 halftime lead to the Raiders at home on Monday Night to lose and Elway threw maybe 2 of the worst interceptions in the history of football.

Stop comparing Elway's stats to modern QBs. That was a different era of football.

Also, Elway's hype comes from his running ability, playoff/super bowl appearances and the fact that he failed so many times before finally winning back-to-back titles before retiring.

That's fair, but he also doesn't compare favorably to the best in his era.

I'd take Terry Bradshaw over Elway. Same for Bob Griese. That's two that I've seen live. Not to mention Manning.

Quarterback A:
56.9 career completion %
4.1 TD %
3.1 Int %
7.1 y/a
220 yards per game
79.9 career rating
6.6 career sack %

Quarterback B:

57.0 career completion %
4.7 TD %
3.5 Int %
7.3 y/a
202.8 yards per game
81.1 career rating
5.8 career sack %

So one guy is John Elway and the other is Boomer Esiason

Holy straw man!

Many of those QBs either played post Ty Law rule (it was already a rule but it was rarely enforced).

Also including Brian Griese, Brad Johnson, etc on there shows how flawed this argument is

Food for thought:

Because this is a saints board, 20 years from now when Goff has 600 TDs and 90,000 passing yards, some young hooligan, possibly WCA’s son, will be posting on here: look at Brees turnover numbers vs Goff and they technically played during the same era because their careers barely intersected! Goff’s passer rating shits on Brees!
