He's best "stat" is his comeback drives and those related games.

So I took those 50 games and combined all the stats from his "best" performances.

Behold the averages when averaged out as a game

19.82 completions
34.16 attempts
58% comp
253.26 yards
1 TD
1 INT
82.35 rating

73'rd all-time in passer rating

29TH IN PASSER RATING COMPARED TO HIS PEERS

He doesn't suck but he certainly has no business in any GOAT or top 3 or even top 5 discussion.

The mythology around him is weird.

He is the best I've ever seen play the position. He had it all, a cannon for an arm, accuracy, could run when needed, clutch, and could put a team on his back.

The primary reasons the Broncos advanced to those 3 Super Bowls they did in the 1980s were:
-John Elway or the threat his arm and athleticism presented at all times
-the Denver defense
-Bobby Humphrey in 1989 (Elway's first better than average running back and helped the Broncos offense overcome Elway's struggles that season to win the games they did)

He averaged less than 19 TD passes a season. His career high was 27.

He was very talented but no way is he a top 5 all-time QB.

He played during a time when you could murder the QB and the WRs.

Yeah, Elway is a difficult one. While you can't compare his stats to current day because the game is so different, he didn't stand out against his peers either.

On the other hand, he was one of the most athletic QBs of his era and had that clutch part to his game. I was fairly young during his prime but think (?) the Broncos would play most of the game conservative and then suddenly start airing it out in the 4th if needed.

While everyone points out Terrell Davis for the two SBs (and rightfully so), Elway also brought the Broncos to multiple SBs and was (if I remember) basically the entire offense. Even though they lost those SBs, it was during a stretch when the NFC won about 15 in a row or something.

This times a million. It makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills that he gets in top discussions where guys say he's the GOAT.

He was above average for his era based on production/efficiency, he wasn't even elite in his own era, much less the best ever.

He sucks? No. He went to 5 superbowls.

To be the greatest, your team needs to win. say what you want be but he lead successful teams.

Denver has been to 8 Super Bowls in it’s franchise history, and John Elway has had a hand in 7 of them...and all 3 wins.

That’s all I’m going to say.

He’s not the GOAT, though. That’s Peyton Manning.
