If he could just hit .250 consistently that would be great.

If he had been able to hit .250 for the year they probably would have been good enough to keep Yu.

Of course that could go for several (Odor, Napoli) of the Rangers hitters. The terribad bullpen didn't help either.

I saw Gallo take BP in Frisco. Holy frick, the sound of the ball coming off his bat is unreal. My buddy likened it to someone snapping a femur inside your ear over and over again.

His power is amazing. I love watching him swing live.

He's a microcosm of today's game. Power is valued at such an extreme but not for all the right reasons..

But he can also play pretty decent defense with a great arm. Good baserunner. He's a complete player except for the lack of average and K rate.

He hasn't been playing every day until recently and he usually bats in the bottom third of the lineup. Awful job by Banister. You could easily make the argument he's the second best player on the entire team now that Yu is gone.

He does and ultimately he can get on base with his high walk rate.. he's the extreme of today's game and not viewed as a leper because he's Rob Deere with more tools..

Watched him take BP in Houston. The sound the ball makes coming off his bat is magical.

He has 67 hits on the year w/ 32 of them being bombs in 315 AB's. So almost 48% of the time he gets a hit it's a home run.

it really is remarkable

can look at cody bellinger for comparison who is another guy who isnt great at consistently making contact and relies on power

33 out of 92 hits are homers. only one more homer out of 25 more hits. when gallo makes contact, he fricking makes contact

its really bizarre and interesting what gallo has done this year

Those are some Dan Uggla-like statistics right there.

Why should he have been playing every day or bat higher up when he has been under .200 most of the year?

He has been, at worst, a top 3 hitter and overall player on the team this year. Sure the average is ugly, but batting average doesn't really tell how valuable player is.

No, he hasn't been a top 3 hitter. I don't care what the advanced stats say. This is a case where they are wrong. If you strike out that much, if you can't hit over .200, you aren't deserving of playing high in the order. Period. Full stop. You have to be able to do more than hit some HRs. You have to be able to move guys around the bags. You have to make the pitcher work every at bat and not be done in 4 or 5 pitches 75% of the time. You have to be able to get a single when there are people on the bags instead of swinging for the fences ever time. So far he has been incapable of doing so.

who have been the top 3 hitters on the rangers, if not him?

Hes still getting on base at a league average rate. You can look at the batting average and strikeouts and view it as a problem. I look at the power and see that he's getting on base at an acceptable rate and view the average and strikeouts as acceptable

People are going to view his game differently, but I personally agree with the notion that he's been one of the rangers three best hitters

The major league leader in pitches per plate appearance sees 4.4 pitchers per PA. Joey Gallo, by the way, is 13th in pitches per plate appearances (second on the Rangers).

Elvis, Choo, Beltre, and Mazara are far more reliable. I get the argument for Gallo, I just don't like it. A BA under .200 is such trash that I just dont care about his power numbers. Striking out nearly 44% of the time is a massive problem.

I hope he can continue to get the average up and strikeouts down b/c I do like him but there is no way I would want him in the top of the order if he can't.

His strikeout rate is 37%, still crazy high, but not 44%. I just don't see an argument for Mazara over Gallo for this year. Their OBPs are pretty much identical. Mazara's average is 35 points higher, but Gallo's slugging is a whopping 150 points higher. And the correlation between slugging and runs is higher than average and runs.

And maybe Mazara has moved runners over more, but he has also hit into 5 more DPs.
