Joe Montana not sold on Purdy: He inherited a good team sort of like somebody else I know

Trey Lance, Brock Purdy and Garoppolo all started games in 2022, a season in which San Francisco finished with a 13-4 regular-season record and reached the NFC Championship game. But in a recent episode of the "Open Mike" podcast, Montana said without hesitation that out of the three of them, Garoppolo would be his top choice.

"I start Jimmy," Montana said. "He has won a lot of games. I can't say the same for Trey. You don't know that from him. I don't think it's hard -- I think you just start Jimmy."

Lance was the initial starter in 2022 but suffered an ankle injury that ended his season early. Then Garoppolo broke his foot against the Miami Dolphins in December and missed the rest of the regular season, which led to Purdy taking over.

"He still won a lot of games before he got hurt, right?" Montana said of Garoppolo. "And so he put [Purdy] in that position to be able to go on that run, to begin with. So, you handed a guy a team, sort of like somebody else I know got handed a good team. You've got to go with the guy who's been winning the games and gets the offense and go from there."

I guess it's also easy to say that when you are not the one that also has to figure out how to keep Lance & Garoppolo on the team and within the cap constraints. Lance is the guy they want to be their future and you have him on a rookie deal for 2-3 more years; then you either have to pay him or let him walk. If you're starting JG, Lance will walk no matter what you owe him. If you're starting Lance, you're probably paying JG $30+M to sit on the bench (12th highest QB salary in 2023).

Can't imagine how someone could see Purdy outperform Jimmy G and come to the conclusion that they need to pay him more money to hold them back.

Never liked Montana. Now I know why. Sounds like an a-hole.
And he was the beneficiary of incredible talent all around him.
He’d be nothing on another team.

I'm not sure about Joe's perspective here but I do know that I've heard straight from 2 players on the team that they both thought it was obvious since training camp that Purdy was clearly the best QB on the roster and they were hyped when he got a chance to start.

He was pretty damn good with KC.

And with SF he inherited A dog shite bottom-feeder team.

And won a SB in his second year as a starter.

FWIW Garoppolo's 2022 salary was $6.5M. He's a free agent, he's going elsewhere

Lance came in super raw and he's never going to get un-raw injured or as a backup to Purdy who put out better tape in his first game than Lance did in his entire career

Purdy's run was great but it's way too soon to put the franchise's eggs in that basket

I don't think the 2025 starter is on the roster

After he reworked his previous contract that would have paid him over $20M in 2022 and kept him under contract for 2023. Took less money, to get an incentive-based contract and become a FA. It also gave him a n-trade and no-franchise clause. So, he will definitely be somewhere else next year regardless of what Joe wants.

Yep. Took them to their first AFC Championship Game since the merger.

If you watch the video he literally rolls his eyes and laughs when he says it. He doesn't think it's a slam. Clickbait sucks

slightly off topic but to me this applies to the cowboys. Would the boys had been better off with the qb that had them at 5-1? I'd have stuck with him and not let Dak back.

Is he talking about Young or Brady that inherited a SB team due to injury?

Say what? He inherited a team that was 0-2 and looked absolutely dreadful on offense.
