+1
Sounding very petty.

Absolutely.

Although his SB peformances were great, Joe Montana did play on those 49ers teams that were stacked on defense and especially offense -- coached by offensive Bill Walsh.

Montana (like the Raiders Kenny Stabler) had the envious luxury of practically sitting in a Lazy-Boy recliner back in the pocket or drifting in it safely. He was also throwing to guys like Rice and John Taylor - and handing the ball off/checking down to horse Roger Craig.

Things weren't so easy for him when he had to face the LT-led Giants or da Bears, run for his life (and NOT beat them) during the mid/late 80s.

for fricks sake, Purdy isnt their #1

he like the other dude, and possibly a veteran free agent will battle for the spot.

NO ONE from san fran said purdy is the qb for 23, and it's his job, 100%.

and neither one of them likely said that during training camp. It's easy to say that after the fact, "yeah I've thought that all along."

Probably not. Unless the FA is Rodgers or they make a big move for Lamar it'd be dumb of them to not have Lance and Purdy battle it out.

I disagree with Joe Cool. It's got to be either Purdy or Trey Lance.

That said:

He threw passes to none of those guys in the '81 Super Bowl season, and Roger Craig was just starting to become the weapon during the 2nd half of the '84 season that he was from '85-'89.

If neither is injured and training camp starts tomorrow, he's the unquestionable #1

He'll have to fend Lance off as every starter does, but Shanahan made a serious mistake in starting Lance last year when he clearly wasn't ready. He's not doing that again. Far safer and better option (team chemistry aside) is to roll with Purdy until he gives the team a reason to make a change

He played one game in shite soup against the Bears then he broke his ankle early game 2. Whether he's ready is still a question mark but not definitive that he wasnt.

I'd agree; however, there's a bunch more money and a TON of spent draft capital in Lance.

I honestly think Purdy is the guy here. I've liked him since his 2nd year at Iowa State and felt he should have been drafted a bit higher than the last pick in the '22 draft. He did drop off in TD production after 2019, so maybe that had something to do with his draft grade?

That's alot of words on my part to say I THINK Purdy should be their future, but Trey Lance is going to be given more leash.

Sounds a lot like when the 49ers gave the starting job to Steve Young.

SF didn't end up with a loaded roster by falling for basic stuff like sunk cost fallacies

It's a loaded team ready to compete for the NFC. No one in the organization or externally is going to tolerate sandbagging this window. Lance is likely never going to be ready

No respect. He took a way less talented Chiefs team to the AFCCG. Bears? Yeah no one was beating them in 85 and SF lost to Giants that year in playoffs and again the next year. Giants were the only team he had consistent trouble with. So did Brady. It happens with some teams. Killed the Bears when he did face them in 88. He is one of the greatest ever.

He basically pulled an early Elway in 1981 by winning the SB. Walsh built that team around Joe. But from 1984- 1990 imo they should have won every super bowl.

You should hear Montana when’s he’s asked about Rudy. Not a fan to say the least haha; it’s good listening.

And with SF he inherited A dog shite bottom-feeder team.

And won a SB in his second year as a starter.

Montana was an excellent QB, but the driving force behind the San Francisco dynasty was Bill Walsh. He was light years ahead of the rest of the league with his West Coast offense.
