Is it cheating if a wide receiver traps the ball against the ground and then "pretends" that he caught it? is he supposed to make the refs believe that he made the catch? Or get up and say, "oops my bad. that one hit the ground."
if the receiver knows he drops it and pretends otherwise in an effort to make the ref think he caught, then it is indeed cheating.

You can say it is just part of the game, but it is what it is: cheating. There is no way to justify cheating...

then every professional baseball, basketball and football player cheats on every play. lineman hold, dbs hold, basketball defenders handcheck, the list can go on and on.

its like the old saying says, "if you aint cheatin, you aint tryin"

no...cheating is practicing fraud or deceit. Jeter's action fully and perfectly fit into that definition.

why wouldnt holding be deceit? its illegal to hold, lineman hold on every play and hope the ref doesnt see it, isnt that deceit?

Holding, more times than not, is a judgement call. Lineman sometimes don't mean to or even know they are holding and rarely would they hold on purpose as it hurts the team in the form of a penalty. Jeter's action were purely intentional, and worse, the way he went about it was to act like a complete bitch. That somehow still is not registering with you guys. Trying to get the call is one thing, acting like a jackass is another.

Also Promine, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you one of the ones who rip soccer because of the diving?

No. I hate soccer altogether. I've never said anything about diving. Never been in that conversation. I think I have one post on the Soccer board and that was during the World Cup.

EVERYBODY tries to take shortcuts to win at some point in their life, Chicken. EVERYONE.

Like Jeter said....what do you want me to do? Tell the umpire, who fell for the acting, that he won't take first base?

Joe Posnanski had a great column on this (of course). He said the real shame is not that Jeter "cheated" or whatever, but that his game has slipped so much he needs to resort to faking he got hit to get on base. He essentially said this was the move of a desparate vet at the end of his career, facing his deteriorating skills. The Jeter of old wouldn't have done this, not because he was more ethical, but because he was a much better hitter.

not sure...don't care. The point is that he cheated.
