It's crazy that Pujols will end up finishing his career with a batting average under .300

He had a career batting average of .328 when he left the Cards and it's now at .300. Unless he decides to retire after this year or has a miraculous late career resurgence, it's a virtual certainty that his lifetime batting average will fall below .300. I can't think of another all-time great hitter whose batting average numbers declined that dramatically from the middle to the end of their careers.

He was 49 when he left the Cardinals. Father Time catches up.

Mickey Mantle suffered a similar fate. His last 3-4 years really hurt his career average.

Really watered down the 'Machine' nickname.

A-Rod wasn't quite up there at .328 I don't think, but his numbers definitely dropped off a lot to where he finished at .295 for his career.

Yeah it will be a choice of what he finds to be more important (Avg., HRs, etc...)

DeDe would get into his arse if he retires.

He will make 29mil nexet season and 30mil in 21.

No chance he walks away from $60mil/2 years

I think the general perception is that his production drop off is mostly related to his foot injuries.

Here is a good article https://1057thefan.radio.com/blogs/people-forget-foot-injuries-derailed-all-time-path-albert-pujols

quote:

Pujols' first 10 years in the big leagues were historic in pace as he reached 445 HR's and 2,073 hits by the end of his years with the Cardinals. For perspective, the other 2 modern day all-time sluggers, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez weren't even close to Pujols' pace after their first 10 years. Bonds tallied 334 HR's with 1,595 hits and Rodriguez had 381 HR's and 1,707 hits at that point. Pujols was the 2001 Rookie of the Year and a 3-time NL MVP in that span. He truly was a once in a generation type of talent.

It' sad to see the drop off, he may very well be my favorite player of all time.

Yeah, he has had foot issues all the way back to when he entered the league.

He has a bad elbow
A real bad case of Plantar Fasciitis
And he's older than he claims.

He’s been a major disappointment in his post-Cardinal days.

Chipper ended up retiring just in time to finish with a career average/obp split of .303/.401. His slugging was still firmly over .500, but his last 4 years or so his average and obp were drastically lower and he would have likely finished outside of the .300/.400/.500 club had he played another year.

which is an incredible feat considering there are only 14 guys who have done this for their career (minimum of 2000 games played in the list that i saw). If you use a minimum of 5000 PAs, then the list jumps to 18 guys
