I actually watched that movie for the first time this afternoon before work. Then saw the A's blew someone out tonight. My mind was blown.

as soon as he went on the DL, it's like the team rallied around him

Not at all. Moneyball was based on finding guys with a high OBP to score runs. The 2012 A's just crush the ball out of the park and they're young pitchers are pitching out of their minds. It's a pretty lethal combo.

The Moneyball concept is based on taking advantages of imbalances in the market by finding undervalued commodities. At the time the book was written, OBP was undervalued, so that was the focus. I don't know much about the current make up of the A's or how the team was put together, but it very well could have been done by Moneyball standards. To dismiss the possibility because you misunderstood the concept is foolish.

this.

i have not been able to keep up with MLB much this year, especially the AL. They are a weird team. 14th in Runs scored, 1st in Runs Allowed.

Just absolutely horrible offensive production. Then by WAR they have 5 of the top 30 pitchers and 8 of the top 50.

#10 jarrod parker - 23yo in rookie year.#9 overall pick by arizona in 2007. Acquired in trade that sent trevor cahill and craig breslow to arizona, oakland also received ryan cook and collin cowgill. Cahill signed an extension with Arizona and is making $3.5m this year, and will get up to $12m/yr at one point.

#13 brandon mccarthy - signed last yr as a FA

#17 ryan cook - picked up in cahill trade. 25yo rookie relief pitcher

#23 tommy milone - 25yo rookie.acquired by trade from nats in the gio gonzalez deal. Gonzalez is making over $3m this year and $12m by 2016.

#27 travis blackley - 29 yo picked off from waivers this year

#33 aj griffin - 13th rd pick in 2010, rookie.

#42 bartolo colon - free agent signee this year

#47 grant balfour.34yo, signed last yr as a FA.

Balfour and McCarthy only guys on this list that look to be making $1m or above

And with this i presume their defense is really good.

Exactly, and now there may be some other metric that Beane has identified that in undervalued that he has taken advantage of. The key is being the first to recognize a incongruence between a performance metric and market value. Most people don't even bother looking for them. Maybe this time Beane will try and keep it a secret for a while longer.

The A's believe the undervalued asset right now is defense. Begging the question -- is the pitching that good, or is it the gloves making them look good?

honest question.

They are just on a hot streak. One of the worst offenses in baseball is actually backing up the good pitching. But it won't last. They'll finish close to .500 if not below

This isn't the first A's team to use that formula. Think back to the 1981 team under Billy Martin. They had a good pitching staff (that he overworked). They were mainly fly ball pitchers that worked well in Oakland. And they were a solid defensive team, especially the outfield of Rickey Henderson, Dwayne Murphy and Tony Armas.

with that said they're probably like 15 wins away from their season projections so props to them.

They are a couple years ahead of schedule. Beane will make a deal for a bat in the infield, he went hard after HanRam. They've had the best pitching in baseball for a couple years. Cespedes transformed the lineup, and Reddick has been great. I think we get the #2 wild card spot. The pitching will keep us around as long as there are no serious injuries in the batting lineup.

BMAC, Brett Anderson, and Dallas Braden are all coming back as well
