I have a feeling its to bring to light that many on here and the rant want Butch Davis at LSU, yet he hasn't been as impressive as most think.

I really don't get the point of this thread.

+1

Records and rankings tell only a fraction of the story. You can't really make detailed observations on coaching from them other than to say a team was on its way up or down through a series of years.

I honestly think this would be a great thread for the rant, giving the w-l record and asking them if they would want a guy with this record coaching LSU

He was an elite recruiter 10 years ago, but there is absolutely nothing on his resume to suggest he has ever been an elite coach.

Setting up Miami for one of the best runs in modern college football history and then turning around one of the worst programs in the country in one year makes you an elite coach

I think the point was to bang on Butch Davis by leaving out the context of these seasons

I left certain things out so as not to bias anyone. I wanted as objective an opinion as possible before all the facts came out.

And this was not to bag on Butch Davis at all, just the Rant Retards who are convinced he is the greatest coach in the history of the world. Even though he is almost 60 years old, and it's been 10 years since he actually achieved anything significant.

I'll leave this to someone more familiar with the Miami program.

But I think he did a good job with UNC last year given the state of the program. All of their losses save for a trouncing by NC State were by a margin of three points or less.

I'd say he's still a good coach. Turning around North Carolina is worthy of note if he can keep the ball rolling in the right direction this year.

What run? They won 1 NC and a bunch of Big East titles. They compiled the greatest talent ever assembled, but I'm not sure that is really a quantifiable achievement. What he did recruiting at Miami was certainly amazing. But it's not like he was recruiting those guys to Boise, Idaho. They were fricking Miami for God's sake.

damn, I didn't realize he was that old. I always thought of him as a pretty young coach

I certainly would too. And LSU could do worse. But he would not be in my top 10 choices currently.

I agree. Though I doubt he'll ever get them ranked in the top 5 like Mack Brown did. And the same 'tards who want to suck Butch's cock, I'm sure think Mack is garbage.

This is the point. His legend exceeds his accomplishments. Pretty significantly, too, imho.

I can understand thinking that the NFL roster won games for them, but what do you mean by "What run?" They were the best team in the country by a good margin for two straight seasons.

And only won 1 NC. And Coker was their coach for 2 of those 3 years during that streak. Sure, they had a very, very impressive run. And that '01 team was probably one of the best 2 or 3 in history. But at the end of the day, they have no more BCS titles than Tennesse, Florida State, Oklahoma, Ohio State, USC, or Texas. And they have less than both LSU and Florida.

Butch Davis just took UNC to a bowl game, thats quite an achievement since they have only been to 1 or 2 others in that past 10 years. His team is getting better.

As far as Mack Brown getting UNC ranked in the Top 5 was quite an achievement, but remember he also went 1-10 and then 1-10 his first two seasons, (when Fla. State, Miami, and VA Tech werent even in the ACC)

If Butch Davis (even at his old age) stays 10 years @ UNC like Mack did, I'll bet he will have won more conferences championships @UNC than Brown did.
