He is going into his 9th season in CFB. Here is his teams' records his 1st 8 seasons, and their corresponding final AP ranking.

8-3 20
9-3 14
5-6 UR
9-3 20
9-4 15
11-1 2
4-8 UR
8-5 (4-4) UR
8-5 (4-4) UR
8-5 (4-4) UR

Now granted, you don't know what school(s) this coach was at, what conference they played in, and the state of the program(s) he took over. But on the surface, is there any way this could be considered elite?

Those are crucial bits of information regarding how successful this tenure is.

But, assuming it isn't a wasteland of football, this cannot be considered "elite".

I agree that you can't fully measure exactly how successful he was without all the information. But surely there is enough to suggest that he should not be considered one of the top 5 coaches in the country.

No, Richt has been significantly more successful imho.

What if I told you those 1st 6 seasons' records were compiled while playing in the Big East.

Uh, no. Richt usually wins 10+ games in his average season at Georgia.

I was pretty confused because this is not nine consecutive seasons.

But I would say that he was once an elite coach.

I think the point was to bang on Butch Davis by leaving out the context of these seasons

He was an elite recruiter 10 years ago, but there is absolutely nothing on his resume to suggest he has ever been an elite coach.
