But Miami was the best team in the nation that year, that was just a lucky game for the Buckeyes.

I think Miami would have won 7, maybe 8, out of 10 times (but wait, I'm a homer!), but they didn't get it done when it mattered most.

I also honestly believe Miami was the best team in the nation in 2001 as well, and deserved a shot over Florida State.

Assuming you mean 2000 here, since I think they made it clear they were the best in 01.

And this was not to bag on Butch Davis at all, just the Rant Retards who are convinced he is the greatest coach in the history of the world. Even though he is almost 60 years old, and it's been 10 years since he actually achieved anything significant.

This is a very good point. I would submit that had he been hired by LSU in 2005 and not gone to UNC, his record would be better, but not better than what Les Miles did. Some like to think that if LSU had hired (Spurrier, Davis, Petrino or just kept Saban) that would have won at least to NC between 2005-2007 which is absurd. Winning NC is hard, there are several teams, like Florida, Texas and yes USC that had the quality of talent as LSU in those years.

JR + Bowe + Davis + Early + Keiland + Dickson in petrino's offense would have been magical

probably so, but that doesn't mean we would have won more games. Its easy to say with Petrino we would have scored more than 3 at AU. Again, prolly so, but the whole game would have been different. We would have had an entirely different staff, they prepare for us differently etc. Maybe we win that game, but lose a different one. We just don't know.

And anyway, to answer the question, he's not a great coach. From a BCS conference standpoint, I really feel there are only two no-doubt-about-it great coaches, Carroll and Meyer. Saban's up there, too, and maybe a coach like Brian Kelley, though I'd like to see a little more before calling him, "great". I guess you could call Brown, Stoops, Miles, and Tressel great, mainly cause they've won NC's also, if you wanted to, but I really don't feel any of them are "great", but rather just good-very good. Davis is probably around this area, or a tad lower. A good coach, but not amazing. Probably around 15th best coach in the country, when speaking just from the BCS conferences.

There's nothing great about Miles. If it wasn't for a fluke loss to Pittsburgh by WVU people would be talking about how he couldn't win a NC with TWO ('06/'07) of the most talented LSU teams of all time.

I agree. I wasn't calling him great, just saying others can/do.

Due to the devolution of this thread into an OSU/Miami 2002 douchefest, I thought about not bumping this thread. But BilJ helped change my mind.

Thought this might be a good time to bump this thread. Butch has had a few decent seasons in a shite ACC, but his best finish at UNC was a 3rd place in the Coastal division and a loss in the Meineke Care Care Bowl. In the shite ACC, he has mustered an impressive 15-17 record in 5 seasons. And he has not had a team finished ranked in the top 25 since 2000. That's right, 11 years. And he only has 1 top 10 EVER to his resume. It is baffling that he was still considered to be an elite coach so recently.

GT owns Butch.

He certainly has been a disappointment, but last year was supposed to be the culmination. Instead they're fricked.

Awesome bump

Elite recruiter and eye for talent, but a mediocre X's and O's guy.

Seriously, have you seen the 1st round talent he's churning out year after year?
