Ohtani is a great player there is no doubt, even dominating both pitching and hitting 2021-2023. If he was solely a pitcher we would say he is talented but injury prone, Tyler Glasgow comes to mind as Ohtani has made 23,28,23 starts and pitched over 135 innings once. So while he gives ace like performance you are not getting a season from him.
As a hitter he is a great power bat but one of many, not the absolute best as Judge, Acuna, Betts have been better/had better seasons. What makes Ohtani special is for three seasons he did both. If he comes back and becomes a middling person tcher while still hitting then he will lose some luster since what makes him special is that he can dominate on both sides of the plate.

I'll reserve judgement until his career is over to see what the numbers will look like then.

If Ken Griffey Jr. had been able to stay healthy, I think that he would be the GOAT

Still the sweetest/most pure swing I have ever seen and obviously an elite, truly 5-tool player

I would have to give that to Ty but regarding the OP cross generational, especially with nearly 100 years in between, comparisons are basically useless and more emotion than objectivism. You can see this easily by looking at how many individual records are dominated by players from 80-130 years ago

Baseball is especially bad cross-generational. Football at least has the objectively massive line size differential, such that there's no real reason to suggest the 2023 Carolina Panthers couldn't knock the snot out of the 1923 Green Bay Packers. Baseball wise you have to answer if hitting a 78MPH scuffed up spitball is easier/harder than hitting a string of 95MPH lefty relievers.

Best (relative to their generation) will always be Ruth. He lapped the field in a way that no other major leaguer can come close to.

Ohtani is a great player, but his strongest attribute is he's taking up 2 roster spots being one guy when he's healthy enough to pitch, so now someone who would otherwise be a AAA starter is now sitting at the back of the bench in MLB. But this season he is a comically expensive DH.

If you combine Barry Bonds with Tom Glavine you have Babe Ruth. Ohtani isn't that good

Babe Ruth's fat arse would strikeout every at bat with todays pitchers. Hell Ohtani himself on the mound would lock down Ruth at the plate.

Once he eclipses Ruth’s HR record, then I’ll say yes

Why would it take him to eclipse his homerun record to make the claim? He is already a better pitcher than Ruth. I'm not saying Ohtani is the GOAT but if Ohtani keeps up his pitching career close to what it has been so far, he won't need to top Ruth's homerun record.

Until proven otherwise, Pujols is the GOAT of the 21st century:

Ruth didn't even play against non-whites.

And that’s how he gave the Cardinals their first WS title. If he were a tad bit faster he’s safe at second and who knows how that inning would’ve turned out.

What? Babe Ruth was a legit starting pitcher for 3-4 years. Tom Glavine had a 20 year career as a starting pitcher with more than 3x the wins.
