But idiot ESPN keeps saying it's because they scored more points than any AP Champ since 1936.
They played fricking 15 games, most AP champs played 10-12 throughout all of history.

What do you mean "are they better?" Good Power 5 college football teams playing today will logically, naturally, and athletically be superior to those playing 20-25 years ago due to many factors. If we're comparing the eras and dominance relating to that particular era, I don't think a team on this earth could touch what Miami was doing in 2001 with all that legendary talent, it was a nuclear absurdity. 1995 Nebraska set the gold standard with their dominant play on both sides of the ball.

It's an impossible question to answer.
But to be in the conversation is fricking awesome.

How many top 10 opponents did they play? Were they still playing Pacific?
Posted on 1/14/20 at 2:00 pm to Jake88
Results say they played 4 top 10 teams (8 K State, 7 Colorado, 10 Kansas, 2 Florida).
Other games were against Okie State, Michigan State (Saban), Arizona State, Pacific, Wazzu, Mizzou, and Oklahoma.

Nebraska 95 whooped everyone’s arse in a fashion never seen before or since in the Poll Era.
25 players on that Miami team spent multiple seasons as STARTERS on NFL teams. Over half of the 85 scholarship players spent time on a NFL roster.
LSU had a phenomenal season but the answer is a clear no.

That Nebraska team mauled people.
I remember watching LSU and Nebraska that year and wondered if LSU would ever be on that level.
Miami had a ton of NFL talent on that roster, not sure LSU can duplicate it from a NFL standpoint but this LSU schedule was light years better than what Miami played that year in the Big East
I still think LSU roster in 2011 might have been the most talented except they did not have a QB anywhere near Burrow. The NFL will judge the talent on this team compared to 2011 over time.

Certainly that Nebraska team was dominant and a strong argument can be made they were the best team in history (or at least recent history). But I don't think the clear answer is "no".
The combined winning % of Nebraska's opponents that season (excluding each team's loss to Nebraska) is .590.
The combined winning % of LSU's opponents this season (excluding each team's loss to LSU) is .650
Four of the teams Nebraska beat finished in the AP top 25. Respectively they were ranked: 2, 5, 7, 9
Seven of the teams LSU beat this year finished in the AP top 25. Respectively they were ranked: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 14, 25
Of Nebraska's four top 25 wins TWO were AWAY from home (including neutral sites)
Of LSU's seven top 25 wins FIVE were AWAY from home (including neutral sites)

That’s nice but still.
17 players from that Miami team were drafted in the first round and 39 in total were drafted. If you were a scholarship player for Miami foootball in 2001, there is a 46% chance you were drafted by a NFL team. That doesn’t include guys who were picked up as UDFA.
LSU has never had a team with that amount of NFL talent on it. Hell I doubt Alabama, Southern Cal or Ohio State have either.

Miami may have had the most drafted, but this is about what happened before that.

And LSU was neither more talented than Miami nor more dominant than Nebraska.0

FOH yall still playing Georgia Southern and Northwestern State? Nebraska played 4 top 10 teams, beat them by an average of 31 points. Looked at LSUs 4 WIDEST top 10 victories, won by 23 points

Candidly, that 2001 Miami team tends to be overrated based on the NFL careers of the players on the roster.
If you look back at their schedule, it was a soft Big East lineup littered with a empty calories teams like 2-9 Rutgers (Schiano's first season), Temple, 3-8 WVU (Rich Rod's first season), Pitt, and BC to go with a 5-6 Penn State and a controversial Nebraska team that had just gotten obliterated by Colorado in their last regular season game and no business being in the NC game
