This is a convo me and a friend had. I told him i think Fleck is a great HC and should get a chance at a bigger school. He claims he isn’t because he’s not competing for the big 10 championship. My rebuttal is that he’s had 4 9+ win seasons at Minnesota and there is a ceiling at a school like that. What do y’all think?

He is a good coach but too weird to be put in charge of an elite program.

Yes. I don't know if he would translate well to a blue blood, but he's perfect at this midsize level

I think you're closer to being right than your friend, but I don't know if Fleck will translate to a big program, aymore.

A school like Minny is a good spot for him.

A comparable SEC school would be a 2nd tier school like UK or Arkansas (I'd say Tennessee but their fanbase is insane)

Yes.

Not every program is championship or bust.

I think Gophers' fans would like to see them take the next step, though, like Wisconsin or Iowa did long ago, and win at least a share of a B1G title.

Speaking of Wisconsin and Iowa, the Gophers are 3-3 against the Badgers since Fleck got in town. This is after losing about 20 games in a row. They're 0-6 against Iowa, though.

One of these things is not like the other.

all of this. He is a good coach, but he is weird somewhat. He would have been a good fit at a school like clemson before the NIL era as I believe him and Dabo are similar. Thing is, as you can see with Dabo, all that weird bullshite doesnt end up working in the NIL and TP era imo

im a big fleck fan and think he will continue to win at an 8-9 game clip. my question though is that good enough long term for minnesota fans? We have seen this story plenty of times...coach goes in, sets up his program and by year 3 is winning 9 or so games. Does this for 5-6 years in a row and the locals get restless....they want the next step...problem is the program isnt capable of the next step and coach eventually gets let go. Program falls into the shitter burning through coaches at an impressive rate....i.e. nebraska.

i do feel he would be a good fit at baylor. I mean its Waco, everything is weird there.

Oh yeah, because no coaches of elite programs have ever been weird dudes.

Yes he’s a very good coach and has done as well there as can be expected.

When they talk about Fleck people forget the George Floyd thing happened in Minneapolis and completely tanked their 2020. Take away that and his first year and he’s 37-16 there. Pretty strong for Minnesota.

Do you know how terrible the Big 10 west has been since its inception?

For reference, a place like Arkansas, which recruits right around 25th every year, would be the most talented team by far in the Big 10 west over the last 10+ yrs.

Instead, in the SEC, they finish 6th or 7th in their own division every year in talent acquisition, and about 10-12 in the SEC as a whole. Add in UT and OU, and that number drops even more.

Thats how easy it is to win in the Big10 west and that's why a mediocre program like Wisconsin has been able to win 8-11 games almost evey year no matter who the coach.

Those behemoths of Illinois and Purdue and Northwestern on the schedule every add up. Just ask Bert. He got eaten alive in the SEC and had a spectacular resume in the Big 10.

Is Minnesota not also one of those minnow programs though? Do you think he would be less successful at Purdue or Illinois than he’s been at Minnesota? I don’t.

Billy Napier can get hired to a major program because he got Saban’s coffee and won the Sun Belt. But Fleck is somehow not worthy? GTFO.

Fleck is winning at Minnesota, a place that doesn't care for football and hasn't been good in a very long time.

If he can win 9 plus games at Minnesota then he would have the same level of success or better at other schools that care more.

I think he's one of those coaches that can overachieve at a middling program but I just don't know if his schtick would fly at a major power. He's kind of a weird guy and I don't know if his personality is good for head to head recruiting battles against the UGAs and Bamas of the world, or for getting along with admins and boosters that these schools have, and a major school with title expectations isn't going to be patient with him. I think leaving Minnesota to go to a major school he would end up like Dan Mullen did after leaving MSU for Florida.

Essentially the tl;dr of all this is year I do think he's a good coach, but I don't think he'd recruit at a level that's needed at a major power

Fleck would do well at Arkansas.

I don't believe the recruiting would change much with him at Arkansas but he would be a better in game coach than sam.

Instead of going 6-6, he would make better decisions and adjustments that would win some of the close games Arkansas lost last season.

Fleck is perfect at Minnesota. They have very low expectations. If he can pull off some 10 win seasons and win the BIG 10 then he is set for life.

I would definitely not want Fleck on my schedule every year, especially at a place like Arkansas where it’s just an annoyance we don’t need, though I guess it won’t be an annual game soon regardless.
