He's a great coach for Minnesota. He isn't the caliber of coach that would be successful at a program with national championship expectations. Would be great at any Big 12 school too.

Minnesota fans are okay with the status quo and the potential for a 2019 type of season every 5-6 years. They do not have unrealistic national title aspirations. They just want good, competitive football on a yearly basis.

PJ Fleck looks like an 1980s door to door vacuum salesman.

4 9+ win seasons at Minnesota and there is a ceiling at a school like that.

Probably needs to be acknowledged that, before this year, Fleck has always stacked three wins against absolute nobodies. Been extremely fortunate to have Rashod Bateman and Mo Ibrahim. We saw life without Ibrahim last week and... it was ugly. He is lucky that Nebraska does what they normally do and completely melt.

Fleck is a good coach for Minnesota + decent CEO, but he's been at it for several years and the Gophers still haven't been to a B1G Championship Game in a shitty division. As it stands, there's a demonstrated ceiling.

Depending on your definition of "bigger school," I don't totally see what brand schools need him. An extremely narcisstic, gimmicky dude that only speaks in acronyms might work at Minnesota, but four- and five-star players don't want to waste their time with standing ovations, sprinting the sidelines after a quarter ends and responding in acronyms like, "I'm doing elite!" Plus, you just have to deal with RTB being your new brand. Minnesota can deal with all that RTB merchandise and branding in facilities; bigger schools won't.

Fleck absolutely found his home.

Can't really see him doing well elsewhere.

Not a judgment on him. He just runs a highly specific program and any other place that would hire him would be a lateral move, at best.

There are numerous HCs in the South I could say about this as well.

He's Dan Mullen at Mississippi State. Has an easy non-conference schedule and beats the teams that he should, but rarely wins games he shouldn't. He's 3-7 cs ranked teams in his 6+ years at Minnesota. He's your basic mediocre coach. Not a shitty coach by any means, but not great either. He'd get eaten alive at a major program.

I was born and raised in Minnesota and was a Gopher’s fan. It sucked always getting our asses whipped. Move south 40 years ago and got indoctrinated in LSU sports. There is no comparison. I’m glad the Gopher’s are seeing success and winning more than losing but Fleck wouldn’t last long at a blue blood football school. Just my opinion.

My SO is a UM alum and I live in St Paul part time. Like others have said yes he is but. You have to understand the culture at UM and minnesota in general is very different from the south. He’d never work in the SEC for sure.

There are only 8 blue bloods and only one of them (IMO) would even consider hiring PJ Fleck and that's Nebraska who is teetering on blue blood status.

Minnesota has been bad for such a long time that if too much pressure is put on Fleck and he leaves then Minnesota will have regrets.

I don't think that will happen because fans would remember the bad years and would be more patient.

disagree, already was chatter last year on their boards from unrealistic fans

this is why i think coaches like him and campbell need to bounce after big years. Like Carl said, the shite can wear thin after a while but get to a big time program and you can recover.

Got to be careful with these type jobs or you run the risk of ending up like campbell.

hell look at gundy, he is a former player, best coach they have ever had record wise but everytime he has a down year they go after him. Look at the whole ONAN tshirt bullshite. its crazy.

lets run off our best coach ever for 1 bad year and a tshirt

Hot Carl put into words exactly how I feel about Fleck. He explained it a lot better than I could have.

His schtick is great for a down and out program, but the blue bloods would get tired of that shite real quick.

You don’t need to condition your statement. Gundy is unquestionably the greatest coach in Pokes’ history.

Minnesota is a perfect fit for Fleck. The fans there kind of roll there eyes about the whole RTB thing but they go along with it. Minnesota Nice.

MSP is a pro sports town. The Vikings, Wild, and Twins dominate. The off-season is not wall to wall Gopher football talk. Minnesotans are too busy playing hockey. Hell, Bob Motzko, the Gopher Hockey HC is under way more pressure and scrutiny than Fleck ever has been.

It's just different in Minnesota because there are so many other sports and teams to follow. The pressure isn't as great. Just win more than you lose, be respectable, and get to a warm weather bowl game.
