Whitlock on NBA Player Mobility

After watching this video I have to agree with Whitlock on how NBA player mobility has dragged the league down.

You have the 4-5 large markets that horde talent and the players have too much choice in where they can huddle up. The Supermax was implemented to slow this down but with Kawhi being the first to forgo this, it appears that the Supermax might not be enough to keep their generational talent home.

While some NFL fans are NBA fans, there are more NBA fans who are not NFL fans. So for NFL folks who are fans of both, it can be pretty difficult to root for their NBA team if they live in a small market.

The NFL is a team league. It is clear that the NBA is a player league. How do we get both to a common ground?

In Leonard's case, it's a difference of the 31 million dollars.

That's alot of fricking money. I'd keep my arse in SA for an extra 31 million.

He could probably make that money up with outside LA market money that he would get for doing more commercials, etc.

Without basketball, many of these players would be living life at the poverty line. Now they are making hundreds of millions of dollars on their contract plus all the endorsement deals. 20-30 million dollars with the super max isn’t going to keep these guys from playing where they want in the big markets.

The problem is that a league with 30 teams, 90% of the teams have no shot at the title, when the season starts.

Byy end of January, the end of football season, the other 27 teams decide to either tank or try to make the playoffs.

especially when you factor in that California is taxing his income at 13.3%, vs no state income tax in Texas

I agree somewhat but what are these 4 or 5 large markets that horde talent? The best teams in recent memory have been the Spurs, Cavs, Warriors, Heat, Lakers

San Antonio and Cleveland are not large markets. Warriors are recently good and sucked for a long time before their recent success. Miami was only consistently good when LeBron was there. And the Lakers are usually the most consistently good franchise, but they’ve sucked for a while now.

New York may be the largest market and they have been really bad for a long time.

Yeah moving to LA or NY isn’t going to suddenly make him a charismatic person. Westbrook has tons of endorsements and plays in fricking OKC. It’s 2018, I don’t buy that the market you play in has a huge impact on your endorsement money

Kawhi wanting to go to LA is the most hilarious part of this. He has a reputation for being a quiet guy, his uncle pulling the strings should have made him more marketable earlier.

Sure, he will get the new shoe deal and new shoes, whatever.

But if Lebron and George are coming, he's the least marketable of the 3.

It is bad for the league, no doubt.

With that said, the popularity of basketball itself is in no danger. The younger generation loves players, not teams. Stern was big on marketing the talents of Jordan. The difference is that players like Jordan, Magic, Bird, etc, didn’t jump from team to team.

As previously pointed out, it’s not exclusively a market-size issue. After all, Cleveland and San Antonio aren’t major markets. However, those are rare exceptions. SA has a culture that is just not the norm in today’s sports landscape, and King James only entertained Cleveland because it’s his home.

I guess it still boggles my mind how the NBA survives in places like Sacramento, Minneapolis, and even Milwaukee and Orlando. Aside from a flash a talent here or there, these teams are damn near irrelevant. You can add in 8-10 other franchises year to year.

In football and baseball, your team can catch lightning in a bottle and make a run to a title. The Eagles weren’t a huge favorite coming into this past season. The Jaguars were so close to advancing to the Super Bowl. The Rams are a player once again. In baseball, parity is the norm.

Basketball doesn’t have that. I don’t get how the fans in places like Detroit and Memphis continue to support teams.

They need to put a hard salary cap. No luxury tax.
