Jim Plunkett should be in the HOF. Without question. I’m not sure Eli even makes the NFL if his name was not Manning. He was decent at best.

no way, Plunkett is a great story but not a HOF QB

in 15 seasons he only started 144 games
in 15 seasons he threw more INTs than TDs 8 times
in 15 seasons he played the whole season 8 times
one ROTY Award, one Comeback Player, no Pro Bowls, no All Pro teams

think about that for a second, during his career the Pro Bowl took between 4 and 7 QBs total. Usually two to three QBs from each Conference. He was never considered one of the top three QBs in his Conference.

in 1980 he won Comeback player of the year, A Super Bowl, Super Bowl MVP and did not make All Pro or the Pro Bowl.

he played on only four winning teams

he was hampered by injuries and played on a lot of bad teams, but he just doesnt have the stats to be a HOF QB

Davis was also a 3x 1st team All-Pro, 2x NFL OPOY, and won NFL MVP. Davis had 3 regular seasons where he was a top 3 RB (2 in which he was the best). Eli had zero seasons leading the league in any major passing category except INTs and had maybe one season as even a top 5 QB. They’re not really comparable But Eli will get in so it doesn’t matter

That was my point…

Terrell was the best player in the league. Eli probably was never top 5 at his position.

Those were Plunkett's Patriot days playing for the worst team in the League as the #1 NFL draft pick as the Heisman trophy winner, running for his life because of no O-line. Think David Carr at Houston X10. And people complain about Joe Burrow's line, yeesh!

Go watch some film...the D manhandled receivers and buried QBs on every play if you had no O-line. He lost all confidence, Al Davis told him, you can still play, great touch, accurate, traded for him and said we have an O-line that can protect you...so you can read the defense, make plays and do your thing.

And he did and was the MVP of the 1980 Super Bowl. And won another in 1983.

And so was Shaun Alexander at one point.

I loved TD, he was my favorite player. But he’s in on postseason dominance. If he wasn’t so freaking dominant during those SB runs he’s not in.

He's in. He shouldn't be in, but he's in.

But if he didn’t have those regular season accolades I mentioned he might not be in either. Imagine if he had zero all-pros, zero OPOY and MVP awards, and zero regular seasons leading the NFL in anything meaningful. He got in because of both regular season and post season. Only thing he didn’t have was volume stats

And yet Kurt Warner came off the bench to win a SB just like Plunkett. Warner had 4 disastrous years like Plunkett. Warner has 1 SB title, Plunkett has 2.

Yet Warner is the one in the Hall of Fame. Makes sense by how we think as a culture today. What happened 5 minutes ago is the best.

Eli has a 60% completion % in an easier QB league...

Plunk has a 52% rate...which would be 62% today.

Both won two Super Bowls and Plunk was the first MVP of a Wild Card Super Bowl winner.

We all know Eli will get in but there's this stigma attached to Plunkett like he was just some journeyman...the guy fricking won the Heisman at Stanford. Plunkett beat Notre Dame's Joe Theismann and Archie Manning of Ole Miss to win the award.

And then won the Rose Bowl. I know that doesn't matter..But he's treated like he was a nobody. Dude was #1 pick, Super Bowl MVP, two Super Bowl wins....NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Did Eli ever win POY either? He passed below the league average during his career but he'll get in.

quote:

UCLA coach Tommy Prothro had called Plunkett the "best pro quarterback prospect I've ever seen", echoing Sweeney's words from the year prior. His excellent arm strength and precision made him attractive to pro teams that relied much more heavily on the passing game than most college teams

He was the original Kurt Warner but he went to the dreadful Pats. And basically ruined him but he showed what a great QB he was at Oakland.

I don’t think he is but then again there are QB’s in the hall that I don’t think should be in there. But will he get in, I would say yes.
