That's basically the old Metro with some new members
ETA
Louisville, Memphis (State), UNCCharlotte Tulane, UAB, Southern Miss, Cincinnati all formerly belonged to the Metro Conference

While it wasn't a power conference in the 90's/early 2000's, I enjoyed C-USA while we were in it. Loved our games against Cincinnati and Southern Miss. I will always have a soft spot for that league.

Liberty is going to run that conference.

Liberty is a good team already. The other bolded programs have the potential to be good if they develop the way that the FCS programs that moved up to SBC in the last decade did.

quote:To be fair to CUSA a lot of the issues they've had the last decade has been caused by the teams leaving. FAU, UAB, and Marshall have been competitive to exceptional for the better half of that stretch, but USM, ODU, Charlotte, Rice, UTSA, and UNT have been bottom schools outside of a year or two for UTSA and UNT. If CUSA had found a way to shed FIU and UTEP I'd say they made out fairly well all things considered. WKU and MTSU have been average at worst and LTU has had some good runs in FB and MBB during that stretch. Looking back the Belt made the right calls with App, Coastal, and the Georgia schools that have been at or near the top to buoy the Belt to where it is in the pecking order, while CUSA chased markets and had longstanding members turn into shells of themselves. I think SHSU, Jax, Liberty, and Kennesaw all look to be teams with a lot of potential to be for CUSA what the callups were to the Belt a decade ago. I get the NMSU move for UTEP to have a travel partner, and maybe adding them reinvigorates both those fan bases especially on the hardwood. I think it looks rough today, but in 4-5 years CUSA has the potential to be much better off than anyone thought when this realignment started and teams started bolting the conference.

That’s a well thought out response
All jokes aside I think it’s a strong upside strong down or type of move from the conference. If those schools commit to it (liberty will for sure and will likely run the conference but I think there’s also potential for them to try to hop on the big boy gravy train before it pulls out of the station) there’s potential for it to turn into a decent conference. If not it’s going to get super ugly though. I think a lot will hinge on sam houston. They could turn into a solid program with the right investments.

I agree, it's a downside for now, but most of the teams coming in have shown the ability to win at the FCS level (or FBS for Liberty), and in MBB and Baseball. It's a haha at CUSA for now, but we all did the same to the Belt not too long ago. If the newcomers can find their groove, the conference will be just fine in Football, and honestly probably upgraded in MBB and Baseball with some of the underperformers that have left in those two sports. I think it has the potential to be a very well rounded conference once the dust settles.

I went back at thought through CUSA.
Liberty will be gone to AAC sooner rather than later.
But for now, it looks like CUSA will get stronger in baseball, maybe MBB and maybe football.
CUSA had some dead MCB weight that is now gone.
MWC
AAC
SBC
CUSA
MAC

To be fair, not only does the AAC pay them far more, they are now w/another high level academic school in Tulane, and back w/former SWC rival SMU. It would have been insane for them to stay in CUSA.

Yep. So in my mind, they got what they deserved.

The Southland Conference
The Southland Conference was a fun little 1-AA regional conference thru the 80's. The majority of schools were in Louisiana, so the games meant something.
Arkansas State University
North Texas
Louisiana Tech University
Northeast Louisiana University
University of Southwestern Louisiana
Lamar
McNeese
University of Texas at Arlington
The better teams all went up to D1 football so they could get big checks from the SEC, Big XII, ACC and one day become members of one of those leagues. I heard a former NLU president talk about that when the move to D1 was made. To do that, they went to conferences that were no longer regional NLU and Southwestern LA changed the name of their schools. UTA and Lamar quit playing football for years, but started back.
With just the athletes that were on these teams in the 80's, the Southland conference was becoming one of the top 1-AA conferences in the country. Now imagine it being a transfer portal/SEC, ACC, Big XII minor league for all of the kids that never camped.
Championship trophies at multiple conference schools since all of the really competitive schools left for the D! money. Beating up on schools from the Dakota's, Montana, and Idaho.

Too many Colleges in this country.
They want everyone to go to College, have the Fed government to pay your tuition, to pay the College and then not pay the government back.
Paper mills don't need to be playing sports.
Especially ones basically subsidized by the government.
