Broncos' OT Ja'Wuan James suffered a season-ending torn Achilles working out today away from the team facility, per sources. James' $10 million salary for the upcoming season now is in jeopardy being that Denver no longer is obligated to pay him with him working out off site.
3 games in 3 years, all in 2019 after he opted out of 2020. Now this.

Oof. Losing $10M for not working out at the facility. That would sting. Add insult to injury, as it were.

This same thing happened in the first season on Ballers on HBO.

LMAO....at least the Dolphins got something out of him for 5 years and $8.4 million. The Broncos gave that stiff $51 million for 4 years and he'll have played 3 games total in his first 3 years.

He opted out of 2020, then the Broncos’ veterans chose to opt out of offseason OTA’s.

He screwed himself. A player actually has to show up to the team facility every once in awhile in order to get paid.

The biggest FA bust I can recall in the last 15 years for Denver. Not even close.

Easily. So injury prone.

His career might be close to over.

Maybe it's just me, but if $10M were on the line (especially in the twilight of my career and earning potential), I'd be careful as hell and have my T's crossed and I's dotted in terms of abiding by the stipulations of the contract.

I mean, there’s not really anything in here that says he hasn’t done otherwise

This situation can happen anytime you aren’t at the facility or at a game, so unless you plan on never leaving the facility for any reason during your career, the risk is still there for this to happen.

Literally every pro athlete works out on their own outside their facility with the same liability if something happens (in terms of the non guaranteed part of their contract).

Always hate to see injuries to anyone. Unfortunate. Sounds like Trent Brown last year, 21M and played in 3.5 games.

The NFL just released a memo to all teams, his contract can be voided. They are sticking to the NFLPA.

quote:

"Injuries sustained while a player is working out 'on his own' in a location other than an NFL facility are considered 'Non-Football Injuries' and are outside the scope of a typical skill, injury and cap guarantee. Such injuries are also not covered by the protections found in paragraph 9 of the NFL Player Contract, meaning that clubs have no contractual obligation to provide salary continuation during the year the injury was sustained."

Translation:
You negotiated this, NFLPA. Then you encouraged players to skip team-facilitated workouts.
Now James is potentially out $10 million.
This is on you

Most players aren't too bright. Not surprising they took to Twitter and embarrassed themselves.

Hopefully opting out has completely ruined him and everyone else that opted out because it was convenient.

How could someone possibly be this mad about another person choosing not to play football for a year. Jesus Christ that’s unhinged

What agreement didn’t he honor? The NFL offered the opt out to all players and it was collectively bargained by the NFLPA. He didn’t break any agreement.

Personal respect and honor. Some people have it, some people dont.
