And it might not be a coincidence that the more of a witchhunt the state has against j.t., the more the nola area actually loves him. He might be the last of the old school coaches we loved... And its not bc he seeks publicity more than he should, but rather how his team displays it on the field.

1. You missed the only point I was trying to make in the post you quoted me from. I never said that the proposal presented by Jane Griffin had nothing to do with Curtis. My lone point was that a comment was made that she "hates" Curtis. Did she say under oath that she "hates" Curtis. For that matter, I have no idea how Jane Griffin feels about Curtis. But, since hate is such a strong term I don't believe she hates Curtis.
Who cares how she feels about Curtis? Why is that even relevant?

The Curtis program is unbelievably impressive. Their success has much less to do with their talent and much more with their system. It's not like JC has had an abundance of college talent.

GynoSandberg, I didn't say the valedictorian was a holdback. I said he started at Curtis in Pre K. This was to imply that he wasn't recruited. In fact he didn't stay back. He earned an athletic scholarship to Tulane but had an academic scholarship offer as well.
As for the leaders of the baseball and football team in the late '90s being holdbacks, so what? Holding kids back wasn't against the rules. Now there are rules in place to curtail holding kids back.

I'm not even hating on JC. They held back guys within the rules. JC produced some truly great athletes who are even better people.
But we are taking about guys who were significant players in their college programs getting an extra year in HS while no one else was really doing it. Pretty big advantage.
What's even funnier is the Vals that got held back. How does anyone even justify that? Blatantly holding back kids to play a fricking sport. Think about it. That's sad

Don't kid yourself and think other schools weren't holding kids back. That practice started when Moby Dick was a minnow. It's magnafied because of JCC's success.
You assume that every valedictorian was a football player. There have only been a few football players who were valedictorians at JCC and they didn't stay back.
The decision to hold kids back is up to the parents. I didn't stay back and didn't agree with it but it wasn't against the rules. On the surface I see how it appears to be unethical if it's done just to play a sport. But again, that was a decision the parents made.

I don't know why you are harping on the holdback thing still, it doesn't even happen much anymore, if at all. But, because you inquired, several students actually gained a college scholarship with the extra year of maturity when they did hold back, so why hate on a kid who achieves his goal of free college? I know several athletes at other schools who graduated at 19 who weren't held back. Actually, a good friend of mine graduated from HC and was well into his 19th year when he did so. He also was a good athlete for HC.
Next, it's sad that you say you aren't passing judgement, yet you are basically calling out another school. ANYONE who went to a catholic school lives in a glass house when it comes to shady stuff.

in the old days yes... but that has changed a great deal post katrina.
I am not harping on hold backs.. but I asked someone associated with another program one day what % they had.. and HE KNEW.. and it was a significant number..
Holding back is NOT illegal.. all they did was move the grade further back.. same number of people are holding back.
if you are wondering how many hold backs your school has...
heck...a current d1 player from a catholic league school was a holdback player.. of course he held back before he got to his catholic league school.. and yes they throw many rocks at curtis..
I'll say it again, just because holding back is legal it doesn't make it right.

in the 8th grade.

Huh.
I thought they were only considered ineligible if they hit 19 before a certain date.

Meh. Evangel is far more impressive than Curtis. Curtis was always to scared to go to 5A but Evangel went and made WM's (the biggest recruiter of all 3) arse quit. Bradie James Andrew Whitworth DJ Banks Cam Robinson and countless others all played at least some middle school and some played high school across the river but somehow all immediately eligible and they try to call Evangel out.

Can public schools elect to play in the Select schools bracket? If not, why not?
Posted on 11/18/13 at 3:19 pm to choupiquesushi
It's 5th grade. Once you enter 6th grade you have 14 semesters left.

Two years ago Winnfield defeated two "select" teams in the playoffs to get to the dome. episcopal-BR in the quarters and calvary in the semis. Then lost to JC as everyone is aware of. shouldn't be able to bend the rules just because your being a sore loser, despite JC being national champions in 2A...

curtis didn't win national title the year they beat winnfield....
but I am still waiting for someone from winnfield to tell me how the kid that lived in another parish was eligible to play that season? yes his mom lived in winnfield but.... he lived with other relatives in another parish.

was the mom's address on file at the school?
maybe he started there and moved halfway through the year, but kept going to his old school
