Important part here.

Both threw the ball about 20% more than the average QB of their era...

Can I use this thread to say the ONE TD PER GAME FOR A BUNCH OF GAMES streak is no big deal?

When DB's could maul the receiver all the way down the field and O-lineman couldn't use their hands and the QBs could be hammered.

During the 47-game streak, Unitas:
Attempted 27.6 passes per game; completed 14.8.
Gained 8.20 yards per attempt; 15.3 yards per completion.
Averaged 2.17 TD passes per game.
Completed one of every 12.7 passes for a TD.
Threw one TD pass for every 6.8 completions.

No. of TDs during streak
1956 -3
1957 - *24
1958 - *19
1959 - *32
1960 - 24
* led league

During Unitas' streak

Passing attempts/Rushing attempts
1956 - 279/432
1957 - 314/434
1958 - 354/456 (NFL Champs)
1959 - 375/435 (NFL Champs)
1960 - 393/345

(only once did Unitas attempt more passes than rushes during the streak)

When DB's can't touch you or the QB...

Brees

Passing attempts/Rushing attempts
2009 - 544/468 (SB Champs)
2010 - 661/380
2011 - 662/431
2012 - 236/172 (so far)

(Brees has never attempted more rushes than passes during his streak)

I saw Unitas in his prime. He was a great passer and made great decisions. But he was not very mobile. Did not have the escapability of a guy like John Elway.

Marino wasn't exactly mobile either.

It really is incredibly difficult to judge how someone would do with such a large generation gap. While the defense rules were less stringent, there weren't Woodson's and Revis' in coverage with an Ed Reed or Laron Landry playing over the top.

You gonna give Johnny Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Fitzgerald, and Gronkowski?

I think he'd be fine.

They didn't need to play over the top when they could bump your arse all the way down the field and the take off your head with a head shot or clothesline when you tried to catch the ball.
