30 plus years of grinding scratching and clawing to get themselves in position to be able to make a move like that is what gives them the right to do that. Along with the buyout that has to be paid in their contract.

Outside of Saban retiring, all of those had huge financial aspects. Players can’t just leave in a whim with zero accountability.

They lose the money that those school's "collectives" are paying them.

They need to get rid of NIL and also the massive TV deals. These college sports are now just inferior pro leagues.

I don’t mind NIL, I just wish it was structured differently. I think Harbaugh was onto something when he talked about a revenue sharing model.

Coaches can get fired at any time.

And most of these guys are 18 and over, hell some of them are in their mid-20s and still hanging around.

Transfer portal is what needs to go. No more free transfers either. If the coach leaves, tough, you should be committing to a school, not a coach. They want NIL and collectives, you can have them, but the trade off is you don’t get anymore free transfers period. I don’t care what injury you had, who got sick, or how many coaches left.

Just start a minor league football system so that they can go from HS to making a living. They don't give a crap about the Universities or the fans.

The transfer portal gives players the same freedom of movement that the coaches already enjoy.

No, it doesn't. People need to remember that a coach can't just up and leave a school without the acquiring school paying a massive penalty to get him on staff. Case in point: Alabama had to pony up $12 million to hire Kalen DeBoer away from Washington. That's a lot of money in addition to the salary we're going to be paying him every year (north of $10 million starting out).

The penalty for a transferring player, in lieu of a multi-million dollar buyout, was having to sit out for a year. Now with the new transfer rules, that penalty has gone away and a player can essentially play all four years of his collegiate career at four different schools if he so chooses.

I can tolerate NIL but can't tolerate these crazy transfer rules. If we are going to pay them, they should be required to sign a three-year contract with the school they sign a LOI with that ties them to that institution, with financial penalties if they renege on the deal.

They do, since those contracts usually include buyout clauses.

If I had to choose NIL. Fear is that we will go to more of a haves and have nots than we have now.

Would love tweaks to both

NIL should be a stipend to all players

Transfer should sit a yeaf

The portal, but I don’t think it needs to be gotten rid of so much as regulated. Only under certain circumstances (like a grad transfer for example) is a player eligible to play the year after transfer. Maybe even losing a year of eligibility to discourage multiple transfers.

It’s 2024 not 1954. How about all those players that made a commitment TO PLAY specifically for Saban and Harbaugh, but won’t have that chance any longer?

Let’s say you commit to what you feel is a dream job with amazing growth potential. Once you’re in, it turns out management and the culture is toxic. Or maybe it becomes that way over time due to changes. What’s more, their is no exec support, and your advancement requests are shunned, so you’re stuck in a role you don’t love with a company you don’t even like.

Are you going to spend your whole career or even the next couple of years there because you “made a commitment”? Or are you going to make the best business decision FOR YOU and move on for an opportunity that’s a better alignment?

What a joke.

How many adult coaches bail for money? How many adult professionals bail for more money? How many adults bail on their spouse?

Then don’t fricking pay them.

We have a bunch of bitches here who want to deprive some of the most talented people in the country of opportunity so they can live under the illusion that players really love their school.

This advice is for anyone: You better do what the frick is best for you. Be professional in how you deal with situations but ultimately do what is best for YOU. In 20 years no one is going to give a frick if any of these players are millionaires or can’t pay the rent on their one bedroom apartment. The fans only care about the uniform. Players need to go to wherever is best for their future.

They kind of feed into each other, the portal allows guys to become yearly FAs. Good for the kids but it’s going to eventually begin to erode fan support for the have nots of CFB. Why continue to care about a sport where the odds were already stacked against you got even worse ?

NIL is fine if it were done as intended but it’s not, too late to put that toothpaste back in though.

Thats exactly how it works…for the non-superstars. Outside of that its up to the athlete to make side deals.

Get rid of neither. Both are fine. All the freakery the past 2 years has been funny to me. Players have been being paid under the table for decades. The big teams are just mad that now anyone can do it without worry of probation or a death penalty.

As for transfers, we’ve had transfers for decades as well. Just because the numbers have increased I don’t see a problem. As the fan of a mid level team, the portal is a godsend because we get another crack at the recruiting game. The big teams hate it because their depth chart is decimated because 4 stars don’t want to sit. Sure, the big boys will bring in some beasts, ala Bama getting Gibbs from GT, but no one ever talks about the depth Bama lost at the same time. My team has more 4 stars due to the portal than ever because coaches lie to get a kid to sign and then they sit. The portal now gives the player a way to tell a scumbag coach to “F” off instead of being held hostage for 4 years or having to make up a BS story about a sick grandma so you can transfer.
