Hypothetically, if you could get rid of NIL or transfer portal, which would you choose?

I would get rid of the transfer portal because I think it's important that young people learn that when you make a commitment, you follow through with it. As for NIL, I think the players are getting paid way too much, but I think they are the product so they should receive some type of pay.

transfer
but also
Chip Kelly just left UCLA
Brian Kelly ditched ND before the playoff selections
Saban signed his recruiting class and bailed
Harbaugh has been interviewing for the NFL the last three offseasons
but also

It's unfortunate we don't hold the adults to the same standard as the kids.

So what about when a coach preaches to the young people that it’s important to follow through with their commitment, then leaves a week later?

Easiest choice ever...NIL. The transfer portal gives players the same freedom of movement that the coaches already enjoy. Whereas NIL is not remotely related to Name, Image, Likeness but instead is just clearly "Pay for Play". Not to mention the original intent was to give ALL players some money to offset risking their health in sports. I believe the vast majority of players don't get NIL deals or outside money.

30 plus years of grinding scratching and clawing to get themselves in position to be able to make a move like that is what gives them the right to do that. Along with the buyout that has to be paid in their contract.

Transfer portal. In a heart beat.
However, I believe whole heartedly that if a head coach leaves or is fired that all athletes should be allowed to transfer.

so what if a kid is signed on to be an offensive lineman and then is moved to defensive tackle? does he have a right to transfer since the coach went back on their word during their recruitment?

The players at UCLA went through 18+ years of grinding scratching and clawing and Chip Kelly probably spent the last two months lying to them about sticking it out all while trying to get out of there for a demotion.

Getting rid of portal would go a long way to saving the sport

I absolutely agree. It was funny as soon as I submitted the post, I thought someone is going to bring up the coaches and I totally understand.
I wish coaches also had to honor their contracts, but when you allow money to become the driving force behind every decision like college football has become, it's no longer about team and it's just about me, me, me!

Bull shite.. you know good and well these are supremely gifted athletes by the stroke of winning the genetic lottery and get their asses pampered by college coaches to come to their school and can now demand large sums of money without proving a damn thing. The coaches have had to prove themselves every step of the way and eat crumbs until making it to the top of their profession.

quote:they sign on to play football for that university. A coach could get hired for a certain position and could then be asked to coach a different position than the one they originally got the job for.
signed on to be an offensive lineman and then is moved to defensive tackle?

I’d get rid of both. But if I had to get rid of one, the portal would be gone yesterday.

NIL gives the athletes the opportunity to to rightfully earn a few dollars for there ability, but really needs to be overseen rightly.
The transfer portal gives the athletes the same privilege as the coaching staff, but really needs to be limited. A few seem to be moving every year.
If I have to choose one…………. The portal has to go ….. reluctantly.

Outside of Saban retiring, all of those had huge financial aspects. Players can’t just leave in a whim with zero accountability.

NIL cat is out of the bag and we’re never going back
Portal is the answer. And by going back to having to sit out a year you actually partially fix the NIL mercenary issue

I agree both are not really good for the game, but if they tried to stop NIL, which I think is impossible at this point, teams would just return to paying players under the table. Maybe the NCAA could mandate that coaches and players must complete a certain percentage of their commitment before they could move on.

for the school that's getting the transfer to pay whatever the previous paid out in NIL to the previous school
helps fix both
you're welcome college football
