Nearly all the games being on ESPN+ at no extra charge (like a League Pass or something) is awesome too.

Blackhawks

Incredibly frustrating lately but theoretically should have a very bright future

It's been a rough last decade...especially being in our 3rd rebuild in that timeframe, while freaking expansion franchises have come in and immediately made the playoffs or better.

That said, OP, even if the Habs don't make the playoffs pick a team to follow (I usually go Hurricanes) because the NHL playoffs are effing awesome. Puts the NBA playoffs to shame.

St. Louis Blues. Only team my dad and I immediately agree upon. Hockey live is exponentially better than almost all sporting events.

Anaheim Ducks and the Colorado Avalanche fan (have lived near/at both places). There is nothing like live hockey.

2. Obtain a cursory understanding of the rules/penalties.

Add to this to obtain understanding of line changes (substitutes) and how they flow with the game. There are a lot of new fans who wonder why there are times of action and times of slow, especially times of seemingly giving up when it looks like a team has an advantage.

Oilers! I worked in Edmonton a few years ago. It feels like Baton Rouge with a weird accent and colder. People are passionate about sports, outdoors, oil country and baws. Its Pacific so I can watch games when kids are in bed.

it ain't Houston lagging

I didn't say Houston was lagging, I said Fertitta was, and he is.

He doesn't want to buy in for the price that an expansion franchise would cost. Had he been willing to pay for the Yotes, they'd be in Houston *right now*.

Atlanta has two competing ownership groups, and an arena site already cleared and in the bond approval phase.

The NHL wants them to go in together. But while Atlanta has ownership options, Houston is kind of Fertitta alone. If he wants in, they'll welcome him with open arms. But he's on the clock.

Well Fertitta paid out of pocket for the upgrades for good ice in Toyota Center. Harris Co Houston Sports Authority managed the contracts and provided oversight but it was down under the Rocket's right to upgrade if they proved the capital

Tilman has put one son in charge of the Rockets and one in charge of the potential NHL team and I doubt they would put all that money up if they didn't intend on bringing hockey to town

They prefer to have an expansion franchise since the NHL has made expansion franchises so easy to turn around into quick winners and control costs.. ex:Vegas

When I was younger and lived in Boston, I was a huge Bruins fan. I'm not religious about it anymore, but I'll watch a game on TV once in a while, no matter who's playing.

If you haven't seen hockey live highly recommend you catch a game even if it is AHL or developmental league. Live hockey will totally hook you.

Quoted for truth. Live, pro hockey is about 1000 times faster than it looks on TV.

A couple of years back, we went to the Saints/Bucs game in Tampa with some friends that live in Florida. We caught a Lightning game while we were there and are hooked. Go Bolts!

At least Forsyth County will be stupid enough to fund it.

As I understood the referendum, it involved a special tax district for the arena, and some capital infrastructure improvements (which were already needed) from the county. Krause has funding lined up for the arena itself, and was intending to use development rights for the condos and restaurants to offset costs. I don't think the county is out if pocket in anything except road widening and an exit off 400.

Still, if Krause pulls it off, the arena itself will print cash, a la The Battery. Atlanta needed another major arena, as Philips was always packed with events.

That said, Carter's group has the rights to the North Point mall site, and that makes a lot more sense for an arena development, as it already has the infrastructure in place. I *think* Krause is farther along in his plans than Carter is, though I'd be willing to bet the NHL would love to have Carter as the face of an ownership for a handful of reasons.

Anyhow, I've hijacked the thread enough. Hockey is an excellent sport, and is best enjoyed live. A lot of great memories with the NHL as a whole, though I haven't paid as much attention since the $pirit sold my team.

This year's playoffs I'll probably pull for Columbus, as holy crap that's a hard luck franchise.

Blackhawks fan checking in. Though, admittedly, I watch much more Minnesota Wild games since they are the local team for me and I've actually been to Wild games at the X. On top of that my oldest goes to college at Minnesota now, so I'm up there a ton for that and youth hockey and...

Ok, I'll admit it. I'm pretty much a Wild fan at this point. I still watch Hawks games but it's been rough lately.

Whatever you do just don't cheer for the leafs.

They're basically a non cult Texas A and M in terms of success.

If you want to eventually go to home games at some point I would probably avoid the Canadian teams as they're pricey along with the rangers.

In terms of locations of arena's and game experience

Nashville basically has the best location possible

Dallas/Tampa are pretty decent

The canes have a weird location

Florida's is pretty horrific

College hockey is fun to watch as well
