Lil Wayne had a Steve Largent line, so that means pretty great.

The era he played in needs to be taken into context.

DB could still play pass defense back then and OL couldn’t use their hands near as much. The league was not as pass happy or geared toward offense.

Great, and so was Jim Zorn.

Largent's favorite play according to him

It was a different game back then.

Meaning everything....fighting to get open over the middle, no superglue gloves that make a one-handed Odell Beckham commonplace..... I mean, receivers catch everything now....with one hand....gloves in the 90s and more so today, make 70s stick um look medieval and silly.

Great runner of routes, great hands, tougher and faster than he looked. Smart, too.

He was the GOAT WR before Jerry Rice IMO. Best WR ever up until 1990. Most underrated WR of all time.

From Wikipedia...

When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He also had a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception.

11 seasons in a row with a catch EVERY game seems insane. Especially when running the ball was much more emphasized(although I don’t know the average pass attempts vs recent years)

He was very good. Christian McCaffery reminds me a lot of him, except for being a RB instead of WR.

He could catch a pass in a crowded telephone booth.

Great possession receiver. Knew where the sticks were and routinely helped Zorn and later Kreig move them. If you needed 7, he'd get you 8 or 9

Don Hutson was the greatest receiver ever, until Rice. His numbers are still crazy. It took Largent 14 seasons to break Hutson's TD reception record. Hutson only played 11 seasons and played both ways most of it (with 30 career interceptions). If you look at contemporaries it's even more insane how far beyond Hutson was. He basically created the position of WR..

Good enough that Jerry Rice idolized him

quote:

During Jerry Rice's stint with the Seahawks in 2004, Largent's #80 was temporarily "unretired" after a conversation between Rice (who idolized Largent growing up) and Largent that was reportedly initiated by then Seahawks president Bob Whitsitt.[9] Largent remains the most prolific receiver in team history.

If Rice idolized him, that's all the evidence you need.

Paved the way for legends like Ed McCaffery, Wayne Chrebet and Keith Poole.
