Which is pretty incredible, but people want to put him in the GOAT conversation and he just ain’t that guy.

He was the most feared and that has to count for something

Tyson would disagree and give Sonny Liston that honor.

His knowledge and appreciation of boxing history is fascinating, which dates back to his youth studying D'Amato's library of old fights. As great as he was at his peak, Tyson has always been pretty humble when discussing the all-time greats, and likely wouldn't put himself near the top.

FWIW, ESPN Ringside ranked Tyson 50th in their all-time P4P rankings, and The Ring had him as their 14th greatest heavyweight.

Not very well. His best wins were old Larry Holmes and Light Heavyweight Spinks. His resume is very weak.

Maybe tenth. Maybe.

Marciano, Ali, Foreman, Louis, Frazier, Holmes, Patterson, holyfield, Lewis, Liston all better

That was the turning point.

Not really. Cus died before Tyson had even been a pro 2 years. Leaving Kevin Rooney and Steve Lott hurt. I’d argue Jim Jacobs death was more detrimental to Tyson than Cus death was. Regardless Tyson was never going to beat Holyfield, Lennox, etc. Tyson came around at the perfect time after Holmes had a pretty boring reign. Tyson was exciting but that doesn’t mean he beats everyone in history.

He was tailor made for Foreman to absolutely devastate. Look at Foreman-Frazier. A short, undersized heavyweight who comes right at you? Big George in his prime destroys Tyson.

Evander kicked his arse twice. The bite happened because he saw the same thing happening as the first fight.

Yeah... okay. Whatever you say.

Even in his prime, he did have more trouble with taller guys who could box, going the distance with Tony Tucker, Mitch Green, and Bonecrusher Smith. All of those guys were 6’4” or greater. For that reason, I don’t think he beats a prime Lennox Lewis at any age. Tucker, Green, and Smith aren’t in the same stratosphere as Lewis.

Kevin Rooney

I watched a video last night about Tyson’s first fight after he fired Rooney. Even though Tyson won, it was extremely jarring how wild and undisciplined he looked at times vs Bruno, especially when they would compare it to his prior fight when he steamrolled Spinks. Two fights later, he ran into Buster Douglas.

It’s really amazing how quickly everything deteriorated once all of D’amato’s guys where out of the picture

This is 100% true. Don King getting his hooks into Tyson was the beginning of the end of Mike's dominance.

I rank him ninth behind Ali, Louis, Holmes, Johnson, Marciano, Foreman, Frazier and Liston and ahead of Lewis.

But I think peak Tyson … and his peak was very short which is why I don’t rank him any higher overall … could beat anyone who ever lived on a given night.

Could have been the greatest ever but Don King ruined that.

Styles makes fights. Tyson matched up well with certain fighters and not so well with others who weren't intimidated (Douglas, Lewis, Holyfield). I'm not big into ranking fighters but go more by how entertaining they are/were and Tyson certainly was that in his prime. I would have loved to watch Rocky Marciano. I was fortunate to attend two Tyson fights in person (Frank Bruno & Bruce Seldon fights) and to say they were spectacles is an understatement.

Tyson was overrated because he dominated in an era of shitty heavyweights,

Had he fought in the late 60s/70's against Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Liston, Shavers etc. he would have just been another guy.
He would not have been a good matchup against most of those guys.

Had Tyson been fighting Ali, Foreman, Lewis and Holyfield on those nights where went the distance with Tillis, Green, Smith and Tucker, he'd have lost.
