I really don't care who roots for what team or why.

The only thing I do find odd are the folks who went to one school and aggressively root for another. My brother in law went to Kentucky and is a huge Notre Dame fan... house full of memorabilia type fan. He's not catholic or from Indiana, but obsessed with Notre Dame. He even got into Notre Dame and decided to go to Kentucky and loved it there. There's barely any evidence of Kentucky anything in their home.

I have a few friends who are huge Penn State fans and regularly go to games and follow them closely. One went to Ohio State and the other went to Pitt. I honestly can't follow their logic, especially the one who went to OSU and is still a bigger Penn State fan.

am I in the wrong for thinking this is weird? Idk. I grew up a UCLA fan and still am but I will never root for them over A&M

UCLA and A&M are big time programs with national attention. In Louisiana there is only one big time program with national significance and it is LSU. Tulane at one point was the only rival to LSU within the State of Louisiana. The other Louisiana schools are just smaller programs with no national attention.

Why would I care about who someone else chooses to root for?

Claiming attendance at a school is necessary for fandom is kinda dumb. Schools represent states, cities and religions, among other things. Real life scenarios affect if and where some people go to college. Sometimes attachments to schools are formed because of a friend or family member.

Now, with that said, I think we are all familiar with people who are “Alabama Football, Duke Basketball, New York Yankee, New England Patriots, LA Lakers” fans that simply jump from one bandwagon to another. Those folks can be annoying.

Rooting for teams in other states where you have no connection to whatsoever reeks of front runners; where you pick the team because they are winning and your local team is not.

If I grew up in New Jersey, never went to college, but was a college football fan. You telling me I have to be a Rutgers fan?

When I lived in Fort Worth...a neighbor of mine had these stickers on his car:
Lakers
Duke
USC (it was early 2000's)
Yankees
Steelers

Thought it was weird that he lived in DFW and no Cowboys/Rangers or Mavericks stuff. Especially Cowboys....the huge bandwagon team.

Are we talking about someone born and raised in Baton Rouge that attended ULM but pulls for LSU, or are we talking about someone from Lafayette that can’t spell “Tuscaloosa” pulling for Alabama and being a dickhead about it?

It's a bit cringey to cheer for the rival of the team whose city you reside in when you have no ties to said rival (a New Orleans falcon fan, a Baton Rouge Alabama fan, etc) but for the most part, let people cheer for who they want. It doesn't really matter to me.

Have a friend from the NOLA area, graduated LSU, but now feels obligated to cheer Bama because his 2 sons are currently attending. Says he still pulls for LSU over Bama but can't help but wish for his kid's current colleges to have success...while they are there.

We give him shite, but completely understand

Let’s be honest, they make your teams what they are…

If it wasn’t for them it would be glorified 6A high school ball

I give it a pass if:
1. They’re from the same state
2. There’s a family connection (my dad/mother/sibling went there)
3. Their state doesn’t have a P5 team (ND, SD, ME, NH, VT, RI, CT, DE, MT, WY, AK, HI, NM, NV, or ID)
4. They have attended at least one game in person
5. If ND, they’re Catholic and/or Irish

You’ve got to fit at least one, but preferably two, imo.

I don’t particularly care why someone is a fan. I prefer if fans stay loyal.

Kids grow up as fans and then maybe go to different colleges because of academics or whatever. I can’t imagine why it would bother anybody.

Hate keeping fandom is stupid.

I would be a massive hypocrite to judge anybody for it, considering I am one of them.

In any case, there's a shite ton more colleges out there than just the big FBS schools. What do we say about everyone who graduated from smaller schools. Do they just not deserve to be college football fans?

I went to ULL and root for them but I'm a die hard Notre Dame fan. My dad is a ND fan because growing up that was the only game they could catch on TV and we grew up Catholic. I followed in his footsteps and have been rooting for them ever since I was like 5 years old.

Probably would never happen, but if ND played ULL, I'm rooting for ND.

i went to a decent DII school due to some circumstances. I was accepted to A&M but a few things just made it where I couldn't go. I applied for a transfer and was re-accepted but had met my now wife and didn't want to mess around with long distance so I stayed and graduated there. Other than a more fun college experience and suffering through the Fran years, my trajectory wouldn't be that different.

i don't usually talk shite to actual graduates of rival universities or anything or say "we" or "us" outside actual gametime. "why are we throwing?" etc.

Here’s what aggravates me. Kids that go to let’s say ULM, but have no pride in their own school, and wear other schools shirts and stuff. I think that’s extremely disrespectful and I think people need to have respect for the place they pay money to.
