How are sports statistics pulled with such weird stipulations?

I feel like you see it in baseball the most but seeing insane stats pulled up always made me wonder how they're able to refine and look at those numbers to figure them out because clearly it is an absolute crap ton of information to sift through when each major sports league has been in operation for over (or close to) 100 years. Obviously they've gone back and tracked old statistics but the fine tooth comb they're able to sift through them with has always impressed me and I was wondering if anyone on this board would be able to shed some light on how they do it.

-> Lovel - .405 avg when batting 3rd in lineup the day after July 4th when it's 89-93 degrees outside with RISP and >3 players on DL

Obviously. I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the specific programs they use and how they work. Or maybe someone would even share how they did it before they could really use computers.

these places create databases full of stats and then use very smart people to create formulas that can spit these new stats out

if you love sports stats, you really can’t beat baseball.

Computers can crunch the shot out of box scores.

Huge data bases.

What they can do is really fun.

Well we had baseball cards.

Who hit .280 for the 1954 Cleveland Indians?

Vic Wertz!

City Slickers

And you had the Baseball Encyclopedia.

Teams kept the stats and then Encyclopedia collected them all.

Basically all of the historical data is put into a database, then you have people who will write queries where they can enter parameters and criteria by which they can search the database.

Databases are built with the mountains of data and programs like SQL make it stupid easy to pull

Basic SQL query:

- SELECT: What you want (e.g. BA, HRs)
- FROM: What database (assume all data is in one database)
- WHERE: Your stipulations (e.g. specific player, specific date, date range, height range, basically any possible stipulation you want)

RESULT will be data fields with your SELECT entries

I imagine Tim Kurkjian has an undergrad intern following him around everywhere to pull random stats before the intern goes back to playing DOTA

That’s what databases do.

I used to think those weird stats that seem to mean nothing were ridiculous. However for daily fantasy sports when you're trying to find whatever little edge that you can, those types of stats can be valuable.
