Frank Beamer always had good teams.

Not always top 10 teams

VT regularly choked away games

He had them a regular 8-9 win team on average during his tenure

That would crack 10+ every couple years

But he had a nice run of 10 win seasons after they joined the ACC

There was a period there where they finished top 15 like 6 of 7 years with several top 10s. Top 10 every year was a stretch but really not that far off

Produced a ton of NFL talent as well

The last 4 years were pretty bad. They were a force to be reckoned with for a time though. LSU’s loss in 02 hurt at the time. At least 07 was more than enough payback.

I can’t believe he is bombing out. He did a great job at Memphis.

Word is Beamer has been trying to undermine Fuente behind the scenes

So basically Phil Fulmer/Tennessee 2.0?

Yea the amount of defense talent he sent to the NFL from local VA kids was unreal

But they were not always a top 10 team under him

His best run was when they joined the ACC and blitzed it bc ACC football was awful back then.

Well it’s bad again other than Clemson

I live in Memphis and people loved him here for reviving a program that was on life support. When VA tech hired him, I thought it was a slam dunk. Guess not.

Same here. I was hoping and praying for back channel deals involving firing Gus and hiring Fuente that year.

I don't know much about the guy at all, but I just can't figure out why he hasn't been successful at Tech. Maybe it takes a blue collar kinda guy to make it work there (I don't know what type of personality JF has). Maybe he just had a run of talent come through Memphis while the other league teams were down? Idk. It is very odd that he has been as bad as he has been.

There was definitely a long build up and a lull after Vick. But it was like 8 years where they were 10+ wins and in a BCS game or just outside it. It was a pretty incredible run that doesn’t really get appreciated since they didn’t win a NC

VT has become the major university in the state the last 20 years or so

Beamer did wonders for Techs exposure. But I don’t believe Tech will supplant UVa. Tech is in a remote location, and the working class culture isn’t for everyone.

Fan support tracks the relative success of each program as well, people who came
of age during the late 90s and early 2000s support Tech. Everyone else, leans towards UVa.

Fans like winners.

It think was 7 years 10 wins

Started right after they joined the ACC playing worse competition at first compared to the old Big East they came from.

He could never get them over the hump though. Always choking away the big game

Both have an amazing campus

Cville definitely a better party town

I was in high school during the Vick years and the applications to VT went up like 500%

The standards to get in sky rocketed over night

I went from a safety school for most VA kids to o shite I won’t get in

I was going to make a joke about Virginia Tech’s English department but I don’t think you’re allowed to since the shooter was an English major.

Losing by 3 touchdowns to Butch Jones should've been a red flag.

Maybe the Memphis job just really isn't that bad a job from a group of 5 conf standpoint like we were told for so many years. I think it was just a string of bad coaching hires before fuente. The team gets good fan support from the city and is in a solid recruiting area. Norvell is doing very well.

Tonight is probably the most I’ve even seen of Fuente during a game. To me, his sideline demeanor seemed quite similar to that of Johnny Jones.

What's the story on this VA tech slide? Their next recruiting class is horrendous too. Fuente did wonders at Memphis.

Fuente did a bang-up job here, and I'm entirely grateful for what he did when we were at rock bottom.

While his recruiting classes weren't horrible here, his classes have been outclassed by his predecessor (his only accomplishment) and by his successor. He doesn't recruit. It's hard to get elite NoVa talent to come to bumfrick Appalachia unless you have moxie.
