Fuente's fall is really strange. He built Memphis up from zilch. Maybe Porter had recruited reasonably well, but the team was awful. And in Fuente's first game, he lost to U.T. Martin.
Of course when he left, Memphis didn't go for one of his assistants ....they went completely outside.

Part of Fuente's success here was definitely on the backs of Porter's recruits.

Should we have beaten Martin? No doubt. But Porter was such an incredibly bad HC (he's a position coach, that's it), that even Fuente was shocked by how unconditioned and undisciplined Porter's talent was.

Maybe the Memphis job just really isn't that bad a job from a group of 5 conf standpoint like we were told for so many years. I think it was just a string of bad coaching hires before fuente

Tommy West actually had a relatively decent run. He had that great rant when Memphis fired him where he called on the fans to demand the program get more support for future coaches. I think he knew it was possible to win there.

The team gets good fan support from the city and is in a solid recruiting area. Norvell is doing very well.

I know, G5 v. P5, but it isn’t too hard to get solid three-stars to come to Memphis if you got moxie. We can get half of that alone just with players who want to stay home.

Norvell is a winner. His recruiting, his gameplans, his playcalling, his development, all great things.

But the major difference between Norvell and Fuente is that Norvell has gone all-in on this program, this university, and this city. He is proud to be here.

Fuente did a great job here, and I will always be grateful for his tenure, but he had no interest in being a Memphian.

Norvell is a helluva coach. Does he really have something sketchy on his past or is that just bs? People that say he does seem to never explain what it is.

There is absolutely nothing to suggest so other than Arkansas fans coming up with a possible reason why Norvell turned down an interview in 2017.

Trust me, if he was fricking coeds or going down to Tunica or stuffing his nose with drugs, people in Memphis would know about it.

Only people spreading this aren't living here.

Hope he stays in Memphis for awhile. Hardaway and norvell are a solid duo.

I was going to ask about the supposed skeletons in the closet too. If Norvell is all-in on Memphis, I can see how rumors would start.

Sports fans (particularly on this board) are so cynical these days, they assume all coaches are mercenaries simply trying to climb into better jobs. Some guys just enjoy what they do and where they do it.

Consecutive top 10 finishes only twice in program history, but I know what you mean.

Beamer did wonders for Techs exposure. But I don’t believe Tech will supplant UVa. Tech is in a remote location, and the working class culture isn’t for everyone.

Fan support tracks the relative success of each program as well, people who came
of age during the late 90s and early 2000s support Tech. Everyone else, leans towards UVa.

Fans like winners.

VT is more popular, generally speaking, in Virginia. It’s where the regular folk send their kids in-state. It’s a much larger school than UVA and has had much more recent football success. It’s beaten UVA like 15 years straight. And there’s plenty talent in the state. Much of that talent might be going to other schools now, but I think with the right coach it’ll return to VT. this isn’t a Nebraska type situation where the state is void of top talent.

I too thought Fuente would do well there. Beamer ball worked ok for a long time but I thought Fuente would invigorate the offense while keeping the solid Bud Foster defense. Some things just don’t work out.

Tech does have more students, but we've won over the T-Shirt fans.

For better or for worse.

NOVA/DC/Maryland and the Hampton roads areas are loaded with talent
Beamer did an incredible job locking down VA talent. Hampton Roads are 1.5 hours closer to UNC/NC State than Blacksburg. DC is closer to WVU/Penn State/Pitt than Blacksburg and about the same distance from UNC/NC State.

This is blatantly false. I have had people who work directly with athletic departments around the country tell me that Norvell is a name that scares lots and lots of ADs. Don't know what the guy supposedly did, but these people are in the know far more than any fan and they've all said the same things.

They don't go into specifics, but they made it known to me that there are definite red flags that admins don't like about Norvell's background,

Trust me, as a n Arkansas fan, I don't care if the guy banged every 19yr old on campus, I'd take him as our coach in a heartbeat.

We are not the only fan base who says that. Tennessee fans as well. I think you just singled us out because the word is he was very interested in the opening before chad was hired and likely still is due to being from central Arkansas

The same background checks are just as available here as they are at Arkansas and Tennessee.

I have two acquaintances that are major boosters and both tell me there is absolutely nothing to it, and that if there was, we never would have hired Norvell either.
